I actually think Marler is lucky not getting a longer ban. He may have seen to as a joke but it is bad for rugby and clearly against the laws of the game.

So clearly that there are people arguing for and against the decision to even cite him.

There are also people out there who argue the Earth is flat.

Was AWJ a witness? I believe Joe was cited by the independent commissioner, not by AWJ.

On a different note, I wonder how this will impact upon AWJ's popularity. In his position I'd probably have just fronted up and said it was a joke, harmless, humour between mates etc. It might not have changed the result, but it would have reflected better on him IMO

The Ovis lovers will think it's great!

Only after an impassioned post match TV interview - of course AWJ shopper him!

Impassioned? I thought he spoke in a very matter of fact style.

Speculating here, but if the remainder of the 2019/20 season is abandoned, then I wonder if Joe's ban will be deferred until the 2020/21 season.

It was a ban for a specific period of time rather than number of matches. I don't think anyone will want to be bothering with changing that for any player - they'll be happy just to still have a professional sport in place.

It would be nice to think so but I can imagine at least eleven other Premiership message boards in meltdown if it happened!

There's other banned players, no?

I honestly think no-one is going to be too interested in Marler's ban if and when professional rugby comes back to life. Everyone will have bigger things to worry about!

I think your mistake is that you are talking sense and applying logic Jammy. When did that work with message boards  :)

We shall hopefully see though!

There's precedent for bans extending longer when games aren't scheduled - SBW got a 4 week ban for a dangerous tackle in the 2nd Lions test on 1 July and was originally banned from the Australia vs New Zealand game scheduled on 19 August.

In the end the ABs managed to convince an appeal panel that a warm-up game with three halves counted as a meaningful fixture and should count as a week towards the ban - https://www.the42.ie/sonny-bill-williams-ban-reduced-3528344-Aug2017/. Maybe we need to schedule loads of pre-season friendlies to use up Joe's ban!

The RFU have done the same with 7s (although in the opposite direction, reducing the length of the ban), Dylan Munro was banned for 4 "weeks" but look at the box "Games for meaningful sanctions:" - each 7s game Quins could have played in would count for a week towards the ban - https://www.englandrugby.com/dxdam/1c/1c9605cf-df19-463d-894b-c75b3a959168/MunroHarlequinsJudgmentSep19.pdf

I thought the SBW thing was a bit of a fix, putting him into a trial game that he wouldn't normally have been in just to make the number of games up?

As for Joe - if they extend restart the ban from when rugby starts again, that will be unreasonable in my opinion due to the amount of time away from the game.

That's the point though, he was given a "4 week" ban but it was interpreted as 4 weeks in which there are meaningful games for him to miss. So originally his 4 week ban lasted 7 actual weeks to cover 4 games. They then argued he would have played in the trial game so that week should count towards the ban.

With Joe I imagine he'll have to miss some games, just to avoid more headlines!
