Marquee Players

Reading through some of the transfer rumour threads and the squad for the foreseeable future I was just wandering, who are Quins Marquee players at the moment?

If I had to guess I'd say Sinckler would probably be one if/when he re-signs, if not already. TH props of his quality and standing are a rare commodity - and usually carry a pretty serious price tag (although he's only really blossomed into the world class prop we all thought he could be in the last 6-12 months). In terms of planning for his next contract though, I'd imagine that's a consideration to keep in mind when signing other players now - i.e. they'll probably have to make one of the marquee player slots available, if he's not already occupying one, when his contract comes up for renewal if they want to keep him (as I'm absolutely sure they do!) Goes to show how far ahead Billy and Gussy have to look when thinking about recruitment.

Other than that, no idea. Currently, maybe one or more of DC, Brownie, Robbo, Horwill? The issue is you have to think of it in terms of those players' value when they last signed their contracts. You could argue those guys have all been on the decline in terms of their perceived value within the pro rugby landscape since they last signed - but their contracts are still running so they're still on whatever was negotiated however many years ago they each signed. Danny's re-signing will probably have been negotiated at a lower rate than his previous contract now that he's not a nailed-on international and is into his 30s so I wouldn't expect him to be one of the marquees next season...

I don't think any of the clubs announce who their marquees are but it's often easier to guess - so Nick Evans was surely one of ours, just as Fekitoa will be one of Wasps' for example...

Horwill & Saili as a guess.

Horwill & Saili as a guess.

Not sure about Saili - when you consider that Robbo, Brownie and DC were all regularly playing for England when Saili signed and also with his injury record at Munster as unlucky it was, I reckon we got him on a decent rate. He is an ex-All Black, but didn't ever play for them on a regular basis and has a handful of caps to his name relative to the 3 England guys above.

Edit: less than a handful of caps for the All Blacks - 2 to be precise!

The other candidate would be Marcus, especially if rumours of his contract are correct. Unusual for a kid on his first contract to be a marquee player - but we may have needed to use the exemption to sign him up without breaking the cap.

Rumours were way off. He's on about 100k.

Would not surprise me if The Cat is on good money.  Signed as (I guess first choice).  Not worked out but could not know that at the time.

The problems we have had with long standing injuries and then also the longterm, quickfire injury hits to brand new signings that we suffered last year, its quite feasible that our 2 Marquees have been sat on the treatment table for quite some time.

Very cloak and dagger, but fascinating all the same. Have to wonder whose Saracens are :/? Could easily have about 10 rather than 2

Yep, fair play.
I thought it was something along the lines of each club had to openly nominate 2  to the Premiership or something like that. Could have fun all afternoon whittling it down to a potential 5 based on some of the parameters in the posts above :)

Alas I had beeter get some work done before tomorrows festivities

The funny thing is, when you actually go through Saracens' squad, there are only a handful of potential marquee players. Itoje, the Vunipolas, Farrell, Liam Williams (although I wouldn't pay Williams anything to be anywhere near a squad I was in charge of - personally think he's vastly overrated). So could be any of those 5. After those guys you're looking at the Jamie Georges, George Kruises, Sean Maitlands - steady internationals but not anywhere near those other guys and definitely not marquee player status.

I'd guess Farrell and Itoje.

You keep saying that no one knows.

Which must be inaccurate. The club knows and I think the player must know.

Someone knows.
