I like Merrick - i think he is good - i think his performance friday night was exceptional - not for the grunt that he always brings - but the open space work which was stronger than i've seen for a few seasons.....

For those of you have just discovered George Merrick - he's been regularly putting in great shifts.  You need to look at his stats over the past several games to see that Friday night was not unusual for him.

Hmm. Yes and no. His stats were actually mediocre - they don't record huge hits as anything more than a completed tackle. The only times his stats looked good came in the Micky Mouse Euro Cup, where he racked up some impressive defensive numbers. He can't carry very well (he's willing, but rarely makes more than a handful of metres every match) but his discipline has improved a lot.

He was great yesterday but has been terrible for the past 2/3 seasons.

My man of the match.

I said this straight after the game and was scoffed at, with people telling me he played ok and didn’t make his usual mistakes. Trouble is he did a lot of the hard work that mostly goes unnoticed and therefore unmentioned. He made some good hits, cleared the ruck, was solid on his side of the scrum (I know that’s not just him but having played both lock and front row I know the difference a good lock makes) and made some metres when carrying even piling through a tough Exeter back row.

Merrick brings some bulk to our second row which we need, in the past he’s given away too many pens but I think the coaching team have got him, and the rest of the team, fitter so he no longer feels he has to lie over the ball etc. Looking forward to seeing what else he can bring on match day.

He's also our tallest lock by quite some way I think? He's consistently been a go-to target in the lineout. If we'd had a hooker who could throw prior to the last two weeks I doubt Merrick's value to us would be quite so vehemently dismissed. I've always thought he brings a lot of the unglamorous grunt around the field/in the scrum that we always need more of and is a key player in our lineout. He'll never play for England but I'd like to keep him at Quins - especially if he can build on Friday's performance, which was outstanding.

He's on the team page as tallest at 6'6", but South, Symons and Horwill are recorded as 6'5" and Glynn 6'4".  Glynn was a lineout option on Friday on a couple of occasions iirc.

I was annoyed at the lineout.  Exeter had a lineout 5m from our try line and threw the ball badly and lost the lineout.
That is OUR trick.  That is the way that WE play.
Exeter Chiefs?? bah - more like Exeter Copycats!

Hopefully being superceded brings the best out in Visser and Walker, and Ward keeps playing well, then we have enough depth everywhere but SH really

FB- Brown, Morris, Chisholm, Walker, Coyle
Wing- Earl, Ibitoye, Walker, Visser, Brown, Morley, Chisholm, Alofa, Coyle
13- Marchant, Saili, Alofa, Lasike
12- Saili, Tapua, Lasike, Lang, Cheeseman
10- Smith, Lang, Catrakalis (could do with a 4th, one day that will be Lynagh)
9- Care, Mulchrone then a gap before Lewis. Though Saunders looks tidy enough for the future and Waters when we get him back.
8- Chisholm jr, Dombrandt, Bothma, Clifford, Luamanu
7- Clifford, Wallace, Robshaw, Kunatani, Chisholm Jr, White, Kennington
6- Robshaw, Dombrandt, Bothma, Chisholm Jr, Clifford, Wallace, Luamanu, Kennington, Glynn
Lock- Horwill, Symons, Merrick, Lamb, Dombrandt, Glynn, South, Luamanu (would love to add a big SA lock here though- Snyman would be perfect)
3- Sinckler, Collier, Ibuanokpe, Swainston, McNulty
2- Crumpton, Ward, Elia, ?Buchanan?, Head
1- Marler, Boyce (if he stays), Auterac, Lambert (for now)

So ideally another LH if Boyce goes, SH, Hooker and Lock but a good strength squad for when a few players are missing

Pretty sure Head is a LH but has only played hooker as we were desperate.  We also have Sassone at Prop. Plus James in the back row, Tizzard and Hammond at lock, Musk at Hooker (he has looked good in the A League) and Barlow (Centre/Wing).  All involved in the A league and a year older (and grown) next season
