Mike Brown's yellow card against Worcester
« on: Sunday 17-Feb-2019, 18:15* »
Mike Brown was given a yellow card yesterday. Despite watching from the South Stand and listening on RefLink, I couldn't work out why. BBC report states that it was for failing to release, but the sanction for this is a penalty.

https://laws.worldrugby.org/?law=14

Could someone who understands the rule please explain why it warranted a yellow card.

Cheers

Nico

Because it prevented a likely try-scoring opportunity so was deemed cynical.

Most yellows are for penalty offences...

The position on the pitch, number of offences etc mean penalties can be upgraded.

Mr Pearce had  already warned us for persistent offending, so a penalty given away near the line would be a yellow. Mike's offence per se did not merit a yellow card, but he paid the penalty for our multiple penalties.

Illegally slowing the ball down in our own 22 after a clean break could qualify as a yellow at any stage of game, I venture. Looked a clear yellow to me - from the West Stand it looked as if he was lying all over it so I've got no complaints about it.

Thought it was borderline but we got away with one when they scored their first try. Thought that Pearce was pretty harsh on us generally. Their 4 was a thug, looking for a fight, lots of blocking runners too, but pearce seemed to penalise us much more. I haven't watched the game back yet though so maybe wrong

Agree absolutely on the blocking runners. They had that down to a fine art all the way through the game.

Yeah we were screaming at one of their most obvious blocks off the ball - no one ever seems to get called for it anymore

I thought it was legal and excellent contesting for the ball straight after the tackle

In fact, though the timing is tight, so I'll admit it's a close call, I think it's a penalty to Quins for the tackled player holding onto the ball on the ground. Though if the Worcester first man to the ruck just beats Brown to the tackled player (which I think he just missed out on) then it's a clear Wuss penalty for offside at the ruck

He never releases the player or gets back on his feet the right side, and he’s clearly clinging to the ball.

I mostly agree with Blucherquin. I thought the release was OK, but he doesn't get back to his own side before going for the ball.

Two years ago that would have been fine, but last season they changed the rule so that the tackler could only go for the ball from their own side, and not from anywhere. It's a tough change to remember (Nige made a tournament changing howler in last year's Scotland-England match, penalising Farrell for holding on (following a very threatening break) when he should have penalised Watson for coming in from the wrong side - and almost nobody spotted it), so you could have made a case that it was only a penalty - but the position on the field and Worcester's chance of scoring makes a YC very justifiable.

Pretty clear penalty and that's without the fact it was a good scoring opportunity as we'd been pretty persistent offenders in the first half (better in the 2nd).

Amusingly, soon before this Luke Pearce told CR that the warning was still in place, to which CR said 'warning for what?'

It looks to me that he is cleared out before he can release or get up and is pulled over the tackled player and held there. Only trouble is that you can clearly see him holding or trying to hold the ball. I still think it was harsh but if it was for constant offending then it could have been whoever gave away the next penalty. What was the penalty count for the game?

9-5 to us. Most of ours were in and around our 22, though.
