It could equally have been that Gustard was involved in the decision with England to move him to wing (as opposed to an Eddie request).

From my perspective, if there is a flickering concern about Mike's pace, then he is better protected on the wing as it gives him the touchline to work with.  It also gives an added benefit of a second player who is strong under the high ball, as well as a second kicking option.
