From what I can see from the membership brochure looks like ecash cashback is being scrapped and replaced by a points system!
I use the cashback to buy our jerseys each year and get a fair bit back which we can then use on food and drink, or more merch. And if we buy that in the first hour we get 20% of that back too, every little helps 😉

Looking at the e-ticket it looks like there will be an addition of e-cash at some point which would make sense, just have to remember to turn NFC off when that happens so it doesn't charge Google or apple pay by mistake bit like when using the free Nero coffee on O2 priority.
If they do include eCash into this, then you'll need to have NFC on as that's how the readers work. I can't see the club outfitting every till with another reader to read the QR code (they'll need to keep the existing ones for those who can't use Mobile ticketing). There woud also need to be extra IT back-end stuff too.  So, if they do add eCash (see AJQuin's post raising doubts about that), then you will need to launch Apple or Google play, and select the pass as the payment option either each time you use it in the Stoop, or switch it to be default while you're in the ground & back to your normal default card when you leave.

Why go to the hassle? Well depends if you get there in the first hour of game and how much you spend in that time.
The refund to your ecash on the amount you spend in the first hour is 20% so if you only have a pint then approx £1.00 so maybe not worth the hassle. Buy £50 of merchandise in the shop and get £10 back, I would say worth it!

I guess it'll depend on your spending profile. I generally will only occasionally spend a lot in the club shop. I can see the benefit of it in some situations, such as parents wanting to control how much kids can spend on "sweets & fizzy pop" for example!

For me, this makes it easier to consider leaving my wallet and card at home. On my phone I can:
  • Pay for my car parking at the train station
  • Have my train ticket and Network Railcard for the train trip to Twickenham
  • Pay for my newspaper at Reading Station on the way through
  • Listen to some music or a podcast on the journey
  • Pay for Lunch in the pub before the game
  • Get into the Stoop
  • Buy beers in the ground
About the only thing I won't be able to do is pay for the Programme!

Yes, but as my mate found out only the other day - when you only have your phone and the battery dies, you can't eat, get a cab, get the tube.....

Anyway, once we'd stopped laughing...

Pretty sure this is just a way of getting rid of paper tickets and the associated admin costs for good, which can only be commended. Can't see it working across all systems as above - what's the financial benefit?

That's why I always have a charge bank with me, just in case. If I know the battery's getting low, I can plug the charge bank into it & top up, and they both still fit into my jeans pocket without a problem ;)

Yeah, I think that as smartphones and contactless cards like debit cards & Oyster cards become the norm, the long-promised cashless society will move a step closer. Plus, as you say, if you can remove the costs of paper tickets & receipts for things, that helps both in admin costs and also in terms of needless waste.

Yep it does and that is pretty much the point I made.
I don't often get there within the first hour of gates opening however I had approx. £30 cash back over this season not a massive amount I agree, but still worth it in my eyes.

So, it all worked well. Ticket went into Wallet app on phone. I get to the gate. I open Wallet and show ticket. A very helpful steward explains to me that I should put the phone into the hole where I would usually get my plastic ticket scanned. It flashes green. I get in.

Very easy.

Simple and straightforward to get in the ground .. less so the Members bar .. stewards were a bit tense when people just started showing phones  .. apparently that didn't mean anything to them .. so card needed anyway.

I had a few issues with getting the scanner to recognise the QR code on my phone. Turns out with my Pixel 3 you have to hold it to the top of the card reader inside. Holding it towards the bottom of the card reader slot didn't work. It took a few attempts to get through, but I was early enough that I didn't really delay anyone getting into the ground. Did anyone find they had to hold their phone to the top of the reader?

I used mine on the last two games. It was a bit tricky getting the QR code to read. On my Samsung s9+ phone it is enabled within Google Pay.

I can’t believe we employ stewards who can’t read QR codes.
