Well, presumably Harlequins would have passed on the opportunity!

The difference here, surely, is that Teo has no club (i.e. no salary), and the more time goes on before the start of the season, with him being in a no-man's land (no club, no RWC call-up), the less likely he is to get one. Is it not entirely plausible that Teo has said to EJ "Shall I hang around? Might you still call me up?" and EJ has said. "No, go and get a club for yourself, good luck mate"?

I saw this as the big flaw in Ugo's argument especially when he compared Teo to eg Robshaw and Care.  Those guys have club contracts (a job!).  Teo was out of contract and clubless.

I think Ugo overall beef was the mercenary nature of Teo. Rugby League caps then big move to England and in an England squad before played and club Rugby and then offski. I understand the lack of club argument and none of us know what was actually said between Teo and Jones. His contract in France is only short term 3 months. Ugo point was the RFU invested heavily in him and possibly got a bit short changed.

I can also see some England players having noses out of joint with Burgess Teo type players taking positions that local home grown talent should get a chance at, particularly if RFU were to spend money and cultivate talent. Looks like Jones is doing this with Smith, Mercer, MacConnachie etc

The only time i was impressed by Teo was during the Lions tour he played reall well other than that he’s either been very ordinary or injured.  Good luck to him in France and Japan.

But that's the fault of the RFU isn't it, rather than Te'o? It feels to me like this is entirely a situation made by them to essentially buy talent and it was never going to end well. As for the RFU investing heavily in Te'o and feeling short-changed, maybe they should have done their due diligence on the guy more thoroughly, or put their money where their mouth is more steadfastly, even to the detriment of the squad? I'm not saying that would've been right at all, but you can't cut a guy loose like that and then complain that you haven't had your money's worth.

Look, I'm not defending Te'o at all, but it does feel like he's being used as a bit of a whipping boy.

I agree entirely and let's hope the RFU have learnt a lesson because it doesn't work, we have great young players as the strength of the current squad and fringe players prove.
But hasn't EJ almost done the same thing with Heinz which must be kick in the teeth to young or  older English scrum halves.

Chris Ashton worked, but not many, if any, of the latest RL players (Hape, Burgess) drafted in by the RFU have worked.

Seems to me that if they come in after RL success, the motivations are different from one that converts early, like Ashton.

Burrell
Solomona
Robinson

Basically, RL players should join Sale at some point ;o)

I don't think you can really argue that Burrell or Solomona have been roaring successes for England. Burrell maybe filled a bit of a tricky void for a short while but was never really more than a stop-gap.

Robinson, of course, is the complete exception to the rule. Will we ever see a player like him again? I'm not sure...

Ugo I believe is on about two things with his beef about Teo.

1. Brownie as a mate of said full back. Sticking up for his mate.
2. Pathway - for over two years Teo has taken money from a club like Worchester probably as a top earning marque player. He really played for the club and probably stopped the development of a centre or two at the club and in the international team.

Chris Jones had a point about Ryan Mills. He is a big centre who is a leader at his club that can pass and kick.

Personally I have never seen Teo as a starter for England. He looks like a flanker to me, but glad Eddie has moved on.

A fit Manu and the development of Slade mean his limited hit up is not needed.

I don't understand how someone could have a beef with this. Unless a player is playing for free then they all take money from clubs, although that's a strange way to frame it.
