As I said in a previous post this whole situation just proves how the current model for professional rugby, and come to think about it basically all sport, is not sustainable with most clubs professional and amateur, or so it appears, living hand to mouth.

Which means that without a sugar daddy a number of clubs will unfortunately, imho, goto the wall which isn't great for players, employees and supporters .

As people have said previously there needed to be a reset in salaries and costs anyway. This bizarre situation just appears to be making it happen much faster than we all thought it would.

I do think we are going to have to reduce the salary cap over the next year or two. It would be interesting to see where the break-even point for most Premiership clubs would be. We need to get to a point where the vast majority of clubs are self sustaining going forward. That may mean that England players get centrally contracted and/or we ring fence the top division with everything below it also having a fixed salary cap or even amateur. Neither is my preference, but nor is the thought of our game losing more clubs.

Another option is that clubs are not only given a salary cap but also a maximum loss allowance (excluding ground works /expansion) over say a three year period. It they do not achieve it they are thrown out with the winner of the Championship given the opportunity or you have a RFU franchise (i.e Leeds) to ensure geographic coverage.

Another thought that has been occurring to me over the last few days leads to a more radical outcome. Is there room in this country for two professional codes of rugby? Is it time to look at a merged code with a joint 1st and 2nd division of say 10 or 12 teams. Again this is not my preference, but something drastic may need to happen. If this did happen around the world it would suddenly make Australia stronger again.

I thought it was generally accepted that rules only apply to other clubs...

That is true. Will Wray see this as an opportunity to ask for the cap to be abolished? He can then buy up the whole England team and most of S Africa for when England are playing.  It will be for the good of rugby...so he may say. But then again, he also said he had no idea how much he was paying people so who knows.

And with James Hook thinking he may have played his last game, who else may we never see play again?

I think League in the UK may be pushed to the precipice (or at least closer than Union). There's a number of the big name clubs that are in parlous financial straits already, and they've not had many games in their season so far. It'll also impact their one big TV event in the form of the Challenge Cup. That's the only FTA coverage they get, and I can't see them being able to have the final. Conversely we've already had the RWC, a lot of the 6 Nations, and a number of games on FTA TV already.

Even though their salary cap is far lower than ours is, they struggle to get enough sponsorship/financial backers as it is. They already had Bradford go to the wall a few years back even after the RFL bought the lease from them for Odsal & let them play for a peppercorn rent until they went bust. As a sport they have far less national presence & coverage. I could see a few of the League Championship and maybe even Super League clubs folding.

Ironically, if League does suffer badly, we could see Union as a Professional sport while League becomes an Amateur sport, reversing the 1895 schism!

Sports will survive no question. Whether some provide as professional sports is another matter.

The trouble is the way the accounts are drawn up, quins is more than one company, the one that runs the premier team is different from the one that owns the ground and its facilities. I believe that some other clubs are run in a similar way. Whereas most Soccer clubs are just one company. This is why premier rugby clubs lose so much, its not always as bad as it seems in certain cases.
