Not at the races
« on: Saturday 18-May-2019, 17:33* »
We were just never in it today. 23 mins left to go and I'd be gobsmacked if we won but our players are attacking like they've never met each other. Everything is telegraphed and so easy to defend. Wasps have put together some lovely plays.

It could be for the best, we've secured top 6 and will have Champs Cup rugby next season. Let's not pretend we'd have caused any upsets in the semis this year!!

What a disappointing performance considering what was at stake. It's been a pretty average season performance wise - they've been found wanting in too many games.

So we don't embarrass ourselves in a semi final that we're woefully not good enough for.

Take top 6 and the summer, look forward to some fresh faces in pre-season.

Against Exeter, who we beat once and lost by the narrowest of margins at theirs?

Yeah, against Exeter who we beat once because we played well and they had several players missing.

An improvement over last season but that’s not saying much.

Defence isn’t good enough & our attack is average at best. Only one decent performance against a top 4 team (Exeter at home) all season doesn’t cover over all the cracks.

Apart from beating glaws away, almost coming back against Exeter (not a good performance granted), losing to saints last minute (another shocker) and taking 2 bonus points off sarries, the best side in Europe?

We've hardly been uncompetitive.

I tend to agree. If you’d given me 5th at the start of the season, I would have been more than happy to take it.

I don’t think we had a realistic chance in the play-offs, but I think there’s plenty of progress made and I’m excited to see where Gustard can take us with a bit more of his own stamp on the squad.

We need some additional signings (wing, lock and tighthead), but I’m confident we’ll make them and I’m happy with those we’ve already got joining us.

We’re 5th. So 4 other teams had less disappointing performances than us. I’ll take it. Have a glorious happy summer.

When I said performance wise I was specifically talking about our performances, not about our league position or anything else. I reckon Newcastle away was our best performance, and apart from that it's hard to think of any other games where we weren't rubbish for significant periods. Sarries home was good but we lost; Bath away was probably the best win but came with half a game of utter rubbish; Glaws away was pretty good although Glaws were off the pace. Beating Exeter was satisfying but we still conceded a try bonus point against a largely second string. Bath and Glaws totally humiliated us at home.

I would love to see more Newc away performances where the team is properly switched on for the majority of the 80 minutes.

For me the turning point was the home loss to Gloucester. We were on a great run until then.

Yes. It was an early kick off on a Sunday. It was just wrong in all senses! We haven't properly recovered from that game.

Gutted about today. We played okay and did well to give ourselves a shot in the last minute. The Wasps fans next to us said that was the best they had played all season!

5th is good in the context of last year but a crying shame given the flow of the season. The losses have largely been by 2 or 3 points. That has to be Gussy's focus in the pre-season; how do we create the mentality to flip that difference.

Just watching the game now. Early on Danny Takes a box kick which is taken by their 10 outside of their 22. He then passes back into Le Roux I think, who is inside their 22, who kicks direct to touch, is that allowed. Sorry I'm not clear on this rule.
