OT: Rugby X
« on: Friday 26-Apr-2019, 17:57* »
So this is what Ben Ryan has been up to: https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/rugby-union/48063021

I like it. Makes complete sense. I've always thought that the reason rugby will never be anywhere near as popular as football is the fact that it's so easy to pick up a football and play a competitive but fun version of the sport in the park with some mates. Not so easily done with rugby. Not saying this will narrow that gap massively but it's the kind of innovation I love to see.

That article gave me absolutely no idea at all about what rugby x involves. Beyond it being 5 a side, are there scrums? Lineouts? Rucks, mauls, can you kick the ball, pass forwards... Etc...?

No need for jumpers, then.

I think they could be onto something with this to increase kids’ participation.

The beauty of football is the simplicity and rugby really struggles against that I think.

Whether this is the answer or not remains to be seen: but in my view the challenge is making the game more accessible, less technical, less reliant on grunt/power, and more easy to have mixed participation.

It would be nice to see more kids at the park just rocking up with a rugby ball and flinging it about - something I rarely see - and I do spend quite a lot of time in parks with my toddler.

It will all help the game - and I guess anything to encourage more participation in any activity I see as a good thing...

OUCH! That's one hell of a lot for a ticket to an event that's not got any real history behind it to drive up sales.

When I read that they're modelling the whole thing on American sports I figured this was what they had in mind - pump loads of money into promoting it, have loads of really expensive food on sale and all the peripheral stuff going on around the actual sport itself. And use that to vaguely justify hiking prices. I'd imagine they'll have to lower those prices if they want to sell the thing out.

The concept still intrigues me in the sense that I want to see how the first "audiences" respond to it but it's not something I'm going to pay a dime to watch.

I hazard to guess that we're not the intended audience.

Ryan has likened RugbyX to Twenty20 cricket. Those who love test cricket (or 15-a-side rugby) will still have a sport but an abbreviated more razzmatazz version could attract new fans who may move on to the more complicated game.

Yeah that’ll help get over the idea it’s a sport for public school kids....

Amazing - a sport no one has ever heard of on its debut and they want up to £80 a ticket. Plus food, drink, transport.

Delusional.
