O/T Sarries Squad - Who will stay?
« on: Monday 20-Jan-2020, 16:11* »
Now that their relegation is confirmed, Sarries players are going to need to decide whether to stay or go. Mark McCall has said that none of them have relegation release clauses, but presumably that goes both ways - they can stay and claim their salaries, or they can move on.

Other rumours have Farrell saying that he will stay, and you would therefore expect that the same will go for many of the long term squad members, especially those who are not up for international call ups (e.g. Skelton, Goode, Wray).

For the others, there will be some inevitable risk that you would not be considered for international selection from the Championship, not just for England players, and then the Lions after that, plus Sarries won't be in the Champions Cup for at least two seasons (next one and then the following one, assuming they are promoted after a year), so if you have joined seeking trophies and salary (hi Elliot Daly) but aren't devoted to the Sarries cause then you might have second thoughts.

I'd guess at the following (I've not done the whole squad), but some of those who I think will go won't stay in England, and could head to France, Japan or possibly even the southern hemisphere:

Jamie George   Go
Vincent Koch   Stay
Mako Vunipola   Go
Nick Isiekwe   Stay
Maro Itoje           Go
George Kruis   Go
Will Skelton   Stay
Ben Earl           Go
Michael Rhodes   Stay
Billy Vunipola   Go
Jackson Wray   Stay
Ben Spencer   Go
Richard Wigglesworth   Stay
Owen Farrell   Stay
Brad Barritt (c)   Stay
Alex Lozowski   Go
Duncan Taylor   Stay
Nick Tompkins   Go
Elliot Daly           Go
Sean Maitland   Go
Liam Williams   Leaving
Alex Goode   Stay

If they have to stay down for 2 years, and it looks ike they will unless they change the rules and that may not be accepted by the other teams, then I think the following - overall most will go. I suspect many were there for the money including all the 'extras' like the holidays. No matter what some have said, they will not want to remain in the Championship for two years at their respective points in their playing career.

Jamie George   Go
Vincent Koch   Go
Mako Vunipola   Go
Nick Isiekwe   Stay
Maro Itoje           Go
George Kruis   Go
Will Skelton   Go
Ben Earl           Go
Michael Rhodes   Stay
Billy Vunipola   Go
Jackson Wray   Go
Ben Spencer   Go
Richard Wigglesworth   Stay
Owen Farrell   Go
Brad Barritt (c)   Stay
Alex Lozowski   Go
Duncan Taylor   Stay
Nick Tompkins   Go
Elliot Daly           Go
Sean Maitland   Go
Liam Williams   Leaving
Alex Goode   Go

I can't help feeling most will stay, particularly the home grown ones. Of course the two year thing will be a big factor, but I don't think there's any doubt that the players love the club regardless of their inflated salaries.

Donuts, part of the promotion criteria is being within the prem salary cap for the preceding two years.

Under the current Salary Cap regulation, section 15 deals with the responsibilities of the club being promoted. They have to show that they were under the Premiership Salary Cap for both the season that they win promotion and the season before that:

If the Premiership is going to be flooded with Sarries players, how much will clubs want to pay and/or play along?

Some may feel that they don't want to take them on due to cost/association; some won't be able to afford them any way.

What will the effect on other players on the market? If players are not going to be offered contract extensions due to what might be in the market, what effect will this have? There may be a relative glut of players that force the prices down, unless the whole episode starts a fire sale to France/Japan; but I don't see that, as I think most of the Sarries players will want to continue their England careers unless they do indeed feel that they are more involved that they claim to have been or they feel that public perception is that they are involved and they want to get away from it all.

Its hard to call how it might  transpire...

I honestly don't think any club wouldn't want the players due to association. It seems likely that they'll need to take lower salaries though.

I can’t see any clubs wanting players on loan. Why would they? The players have to leave and sign a contract  with a new club.

Surely, Newcastle will need to do some recruitment.

I would imagine that Skelton will have offers from Waratahs, Reds, Brumbies and Rebels.

You're probably right, but I do find it hard to believe that Exeter's Rowe would allow Baxter to take his pick from the Sarries squad, for instance...
