But it was you who defined his loyalty by the deal, not me

Where did I do that?

Again, what do you think shows loyalty of a player to a club?

Unless I'm mad in a thread I started about Tuilagi signing a new contract after someone claimed he'd gone to France you said it showed "fantastic loyalty" So that's where isn't it? Unless I've massively misinterpreted it?

I'm just saying if I was going to leave my employer and then they offered me loads more money and I said "fair enough" - it might just be because I like money.

Sheesh. It's fine. I'm sure Manu is lovely.

And you still haven't given an example of how you think a player shows loyalty to a club. You have some very odd and cynical views.

Oh ffs - if it wasn't you then stop having a pop!

There's nothing odd about thinking that Manu freaking Tuliagi - literally never spoken about by anyone as the life and soul of Tigers - has maybe stayed for loads of cash and a shot at the world cup. Really. It's not that odd.

I would have thought Manu should feel that Tigers have been loyal to him over several injured seasons  - he may well feel obliged to repay their faith but if reports are correct ( I read in the Indpendent online) he was on £450 k pa  - now raised to £600K pa and he turned down £830K pa from Racing

If he continues playing for  England that shortfall can be made up , so no doubt the status quo is best for him especially if he is not out of pocket , family settled and he can still raise his profile with England and take a big payday when his England days are over .

Im sure his decision will have been made on what is best for his bank balance and family ( isn't that what we all do when considering a new job)

However , loyalty is subjective and best reflected on at the end of a career , if Tuilagi was to leave in 2 seasons and go to Saints - he might be thought of differently .

The guy has been with Tigers since the age of 16 - ie. 11 years, and his family has a strong connection to the club going back even further. Yes it is odd that you're couching this as being simply about money and the world cup. You also likened his situation to a hypothetical with you and your employer; it's as if you completely fail to see how being cheered and revered for years by rugby fans will help forge a strong allegiance between a player and a club. Yep, that's odd.

You also appear to have not considered that if he was offered the rumoured contract with Racing it was very likely it would start after the world cup. For some reason you're bending over backwards trying to make out this was a financial decision only. What do you know that the rest of us don't?

I only started the thread because someone confidently said in a different conversation it was a done deal and he was going to miss the World Cup, so it was quite funny that it wasn't true.

It is entirely possible that he was leaving or posturing to leave until Tigers raised their offer hence the rumour. But you may be right, he may have always wanted to stay.

I'm really not fussed. So let's assume you're right. This has escalated way beyond a throw away comment.

Quote from the BBC on today’s report featuring Tuilagi speaking about his decision:

Tuilagi says he also felt loyalty to the Tigers, who he first represented a decade ago and who stood by him during his injury-ravaged spell.

"Tigers is a massive part of my family, and it would have been very sad for me to leave," he said.

"The club has helped me throughout my whole career and hopefully I can repay that."

Leiscester has been the only professional club he has played at, he isn’t getting any younger of course and is at the peak age I would say in a modern day professional rugby players age and form. Away from rugby, Leicester has been his home for many many years. A lot of his rugby playing family have been involved with Leicester. Leicester have stuck by him through multiple lengthy injury periods and in my honest opinion I would summerise that as well as the money side of things having been offered a competitive deal, also wants to give back to Leicester as a rugby club and home of his. That’s why I take the view that a percentage of his decision was based on loyalty, as well as money and playing for England. It’s just my view, I’m not saying it’s right, I don’t know the ins and outs of Tuilagi’s mind or decision making process.
