O/T Wasps winger quits rugby union for NFL career
« on: Friday 19-Oct-2018, 07:56* »
Christian Wade has dramatically left Wasps to pursue a career in the NFL.

The winger, who won one England cap in 2013 and toured with the British and Irish Lions that year, is understood to have played his last game of rugby union.

The 27-year-old is third in the all-time Premiership try-scorers list with 82 tries.

He joins rugby union players Alex Gray and Christian Scotland-Williamson in trying to crack American football.

However, Wade is the biggest name to quit rugby union and attempt the transition.

Meanwhile, Wasps are close to completing the signing of All Blacks centre Malakai Fekitoa.

Great news. At least he wont be scoring tries against Quins again. A couple of times ive been to the Rioch Arena and watched him rip our defence apart. Good luck to him and having the balls to try something different. Would have liked to see him in an England shirt more often.

I think he may be making a smart move. His skill set is really well suited to gridiron, in that he can make yards under all sorts of conditions, and it's a game that doesn't require him to tackle at all. The physiological adaptation might be tricky though (absolute focus on speed over endurance) and I suspect the collisions will be a shock. I wish him well.

His height will surely be even more of an issue there?

Doubt it. They'd use him coming 'short' to receive around the scrimmage line with a view for him to 'dance' his yards, rather than trying to receive the long high bombs I think you're alluding to.

There are plenty of short wide receivers - their job is to get upfield and be in position to catch the pass. Speed is much more important than size.

Not so much anymore....not many short players left.

The average height among USC's running backs, cornerbacks, safeties and wide receivers is just over 5 feet 11 inches

Good luck to him but I think it will be a surprise if he gets anywhere with it.

Wade won’t play corner back or safety, he won’t know how to adjust to the line ups and audibles as that takes experience he just doesn’t have and based on your selection of positions I would guess cb and safety are keeping those averages up given the want for long rangy dbs.

It is really difficult to translate rugby skills to the nfl. The games are completely different. Similar shaped ball, big hits and I enjoy both (Quins member and NFL fanatic going to Wembley  on Sunday) but that’s it. Yes some ball skills and speed are good in both but the stop start of NFL snaps and only playing offence or defence or sometimes only special teams makes it hard to move from one game to another.

I know Lasike will be used as an example and he is one of the successful converts but he lasted 2 years in the nfl after several years learning at college at fullback a position with one of the simplest roles in the game.

I’m hoping he makes a success of it but I won’t hold my breath. He could always sign for Quins if he comes back having not made it.

Well at least he won’t have to pretend to be able to defend....

Any news as to which organisation he is going to trial with? He could have signed with the CFL which would have given time to learn & adapt. Presumably he's not signing for a college? There have been plenty of small running backs in the NFL, with his quick feet & moves I'd say he could try that position & with ball catching ability that could make him a very dangerous offensive back. Good luck.

Well done BQ. I think you have the measure of it there.

He likely won’t have a team to sign for. He can’t just sign for a college he would have to enroll on a course and then be a walk on very difficult at the big colleges.
He likely will go out there and train and then there is a scheme to help athletes go from one sport to the nfl see Alex gray as an example but that would mean wade being on a practice squad for a year.
There are also combines he could attend in the winter and spring where teams can look at him then sign him after the draft in may next year.
