Ok mate don’t pull the “they protect you” rubbish.

Actually that’s the police, the law and the consent of the public - and the army navy game requires more police and involves more law breaking than any other fixture.

And it’s not generally serving squaddies who cause the trouble - because they’d get in the crap with mod plod.

Like the 7s, which has now been sorted, the fixture has got out of control - hence more police, changed kick off times, early pub closures.
. So who are the louts?  I’m sure you branded us all with the same brush.  MOD Plod? Think you might need some research!!!

So let me get this right, because some of those attending the match have lost friends in a war - it’s fine for others to **** in my garden?
. Nope never said that so don’t put words in my mouth please.  I have agreed with you regarding anti social behaviour.

I’m sure a vast number of people at the fixture are heroic and lovely.

But the fixture has become a disgrace and lots of residents dread it - not a nice position to be in.

Same as the 7s - mainly posh young students who I’m sure wouldn’t normally trash a town centre - but it created a massive issue and now has been sorted.
. If you think I’ve linked heroism to being allowed to behave in an anti social way, let me assure I do not think this at all and only a fool would. Anti social behaviour is not acceptable full stop.  But branding 82000 under one banner is also wrong an narrow minded.  Great efforts are being made to stop it and deal with those who cause the trouble.

Right, so we’re clear. Being in the army isn’t the issue. But the game has a big problem - and it wasn’t any better year it turns out. Woman ended up in hospital.

Richmond Council has now called for it to be moved from Twickenham..

Army v Navy drunken antics cannot be repeated

Release Date: 08 May 2019

Richmond Council has expressed severe concern regarding the behaviour of fans attending the Army and Navy match at the RFU Stadium last Saturday.

It follows many reports over the long weekend from residents expressing outrage at witnessing scenes of drunken behaviour, urination in gardens, fans passed out in the streets, attempted theft and, in one instance, a woman being hospitalised after being struck by a bottle thrown by fans in St Margarets.

Responding to the unacceptable behaviour, Leader of Richmond Council Cllr Gareth Roberts said:

“Unfortunately, in spite of measures taken to mitigate the impact of the match on our residents, such as scheduling an earlier kick off time, there was no noticeable improvement in behaviour. Match attendees now see this event primarily as a drunken, al fresco fancy dress party with the rugby match itself being of secondary importance.

“The vast majority of our residents are proud to live in the home of Rugby. They are also proud of this borough’s long-standing connection to our armed forces. However, when they see their town being trashed by people attending the Army v Navy game they find their pride and good-will being put to the test.

“It is now time for the RFU and the Armed Forces to consider whether they want to allow this fixture to continue. We have long held the belief that, if it is to continue, then the fixture should be rotated among other stadia, and we will be putting that case to the RFU.

“We are now seeking an urgent meeting with the RFU and organisers of the fixture to seek reassurances that in future local residents will not experience another day of drunken, loutish behaviour which brings the RFU and our armed services personnel into disrepute. If those assurances are not satisfactorily forthcoming, it is time this fixture moved out of our borough.”

You tell me who they are. They put a woman is hospital and caused yet another year of endless complaints.

Don’t care who they are - the fixture is a disaster and an embarrassment to the services. Whoever is causing the trouble it reflects on them.

My goodness you are so impervious to the feelings of those you have appalled on this thread. No remorse.

Tell me whose feelings I’ve upset and how?

The only person who identified themselves as a serving soldier in the the thread agreed with me and said it was why he’d stopped attending the match.

This has got nothing, nothing, to do with people dying while in the army and everything to do with a rugby fixture organised by the armed services which has become an embarrassment for the values those services embody.

It is not a memorial event.

A woman got put in hospital by someone throwing a bottle.

The council wants it banned - maybe Richmond council are also offending everyone - but they aren’t. They also say it’s harming the reputation of the RFU and the forces.

I find it staggering anyone should want to mitigate this crap with the utterly unrelated issue of the military covenant.

Of course the majority of the 82000 people are not responsible, but that’s like saying London doesn’t have a knife crime problem because the vast majority of people don’t stab each other.

And to put some perspective on yesterday’s and the army and navy

Also, given the level of virtue moralising in the thread, I’ve no idea why the poster chose to do it, but this didn’t happen and isn’t real.

Or rather it may be real, but not in Twickenham, not this year, and it was on Remembrance Sunday, hence the poppies.

It was widely shared and in all the papers last year, but no one ever found where it originated or who actually made the oringal post.

Not clear why you’d now claim it related to the army navy match but there we are.

Reading through that statement from the council, there's an implicit threat that if they aren't happy with any proposed solution from the RFU and the organisers, they may veto the use of Twickenham stadium for this game. That they feel this strongly regarding the situation would support the view of some, including me, that the situation has got out of control with regards to this game. Even over the two days of the sevens (another event that could quite easily be classed as "a drunken, al fresco fancy dress party with the rugby match itself being of secondary importance" to quote the leader for Richmond council) the disruption and bad behaviour is nowhere near as bad as that seen at the Army vs Navy game.

Sadly I do agree. My exceptions are how the military community have been described.

The game has become too big and really the behaviour that is associated with it is not acceptable.  As a rugby fan and soldier it does really upset me that it has come to this.  The Navy v RAF at The Stoop and Army v RAF at The Kingsholm do not get such negative press and although I’ve never attended them do not hear of the same issues.  The game should be moved to a smaller stadium where alll the hangers on cannot get tickets.  Believe me as a serving soldier of over 20 years it saddens me that this conversation is even happening.

Bad behaviour cannot be excused by heroic acts or the Military Covenant.  I have spoken to residents before and empathise with their feelings, they shouldn’t be made to feel this much resentment.

I only ask you to understand this is a minority and in so doing not brand us all with the same brush.

Thanks for pointing out the error of my ways

It was posted after you referred to everyone as louts etc
You then later said that wasn’t the case
And I said well done for pointing that out
