Only just registered for this forum (It's taken me a while to move from the old Sportnet one!).

So, sorry to be making a negative comment for my first post. But, sadly, as a central Twickenham resident, Army v Navy is the only rugby match of the season I do not look forward to.

And last year was not the worst trouble I've seen.....

Army v Navy is the single worst day of the year living in Twickenham.

The people who go to it behave appallingly.

It's mayhem all round. When we had our home game the same time as the Squaddies vs Squids in 2012, I had the "joy" of sharing a train from Reading to Twickenham at 11am with a load of them already tanked up to the gills. While I usually dislike Friday evening games, this is one case where I'm glad it's been moved.

Hello DerbyQuin. Just to add to your concerns for Saturday.... Heard at the TW stadium this morning (Thursday) that 82,000 tickets were sold within a month of going on sale and there will be well over 3,000 additional travelling fans turning up at at 'The Junction' pubs for the match on SKY TV for 14:00. The match is one hour earlier than normal as the Kneller Hall morning match has been moved to the Stadium to be played after the Babcock cup trophy in an attempt to lower the traffic.

What were you doing there this morning (Thursday)?

The Telegraph article is behind their paywall

Extra police have been drafted in to patrol the Army vs Navy match on Saturday after the Rugby Football Union renewed warnings to drunken fans who marred last year’s event by vomiting and urinating in the streets outside Twickenham.

Organisers had already moved kick-off times to an earlier 2pm slot and scrapped some of the morning fixtures after residents complained that out-of-control spectators were trespassing into private gardens and intimidating locals.

In a joint letter to military commanders, veterans groups and regimental associations across the country, Lieutenant General Nick Pope, deputy chief of the general staff, and Vice Admiral Tony Radakin, the Second Sea Lord, warned last year that behaviour at the game is “significantly out of kilter with civilian behaviour at all the other matches that take place at Twickenham”.

The final, which has only been put on hold twice - during the First and Second World War - is a key date in the sporting calendar for many serving and retired personnel and their families, as well as members of the general public.

More than 80,000 fans attended the final last year, to see the Army beat the Navy 22-14 in a match marked by the sending-off of a member from the Navy squad for head-butting.

The RFU said: “Following incidents of anti-social behaviour by a small proportion of attendees at the 2018 Army-Navy match, the RFU worked with the match committee and police on a new approach for the 2019 fixture. We will all be working really hard to ensure that there is a more positive experience for local residents and to help reduce the impact of this fixture on the local community.”

Organisers recognised last year that the increasingly popularity of the fixture has come with "a rise in incidents both inside and outside of the stadium that fall below the standards of conduct and behaviour expected".

"The match committee has worked closely with the RFU, Metropolitan Police and the local community to agree a strategy for the future," the statement said. "This includes the introduction of measures to reduce the impact on the local community. This will be achieved by no longer playing the morning fixtures at Kneller Hall, bringing the Army v Navy fixture forward to 2pm and then playing the UK Armed Forces Under-23 v Oxbridge Under-23 fixture on completion of the senior fixture."

Sooner they ban it the better.

As a serving soldier and rugby fan it is so sad to see this but also the reason I no longer attend.  The A v N game has become too big, we try our hardest by sending out behaviour warnings and severe discipline of those caught but that only accounts for the serving members not the veterans who come and behave in a way they would not on any other day.

I will be there Friday shouting on Quins and shouting for Army on the telly.  Please let me apologise on behalf of the Army to local residents affected by the idiots who attend this game.  Be rest assured there are real fans among them.

Ironically isn’t it the RAF that normally win the tri forces competition.

I travelled down from Newcastle on the 13.59 train yesterday with a bunch of Naval Types who are going to the match. They had booked tickets on the same table as me and across the aisle. They were really friendly, extremely polite, shared their beer and helped two old ladies with their luggage. They also asked me if I thought the Royal Navy or Fiji would win.

I imagine that a lot of the strife may come from service's 'friends", rather than themselves. We only have 80K soldiers and perhaps another 80K sailors/aviators (plus some reservists) and I imagine they are not all allowed out on the same day, or the Russkies would invade on this Saturday every year.

From memory, this game used to be played at Aldershot in the early 80s' - I saw a few of them: it was busy but nowhere near a Twickenham crowd - but also no more.
