OT Would hope Quins wouldn`t be this harsh
« on: Tuesday 10-Mar-2020, 13:27* »
Tony Rowe saying Exeter are not a charity when refusing entry to former staff that had tickets through Flybe.  Bit of compassion needed.  Flybe was formerly a sponsor.  Not a way to treat the locals.  At least offer them alternative tickets for a premiership game that will not be sold out.  Treating people like this who had just lost their jobs would not impress me if Quins did this.  You never know Tony, when they have found another job they might even have come again.  What if supporters thought the same... We are not a charity, I will only come for the big games and finals!!

In his defence Rowe did not know they had been given to staff.

Once he knew he offered them free tickets to a Exeter Braves (2nd team) game.  Um

It is harsh and I was a bit disappointed in Exeter on reading this, but take an alternative view.
The tickets are provided as part of the sponsorship deal for Flybe to use, if the sponsorship deal ended with Flybe going out of business therefore not unreasonable that the tickets beyond that date are not valid.
Exeter don't know who has the tickets, and IF they told Flybe the tickets were not valid then Flybe are responsible for letting the people know.

I think that in all of these stories, there is a lot more detail than meets the eye and that we don't know.
Everybody may have a different view if they knew all of the facts.
E.g. Do we know if these were just a hand-full of low value tickets?
Or - as I suspect, the tickets had loads of extras - e.g. hospitality.

For instance, a few years ago Tim Visser was voted the DHL player of the month.  There was a competition on Twitter to be the person who would give him his prize - and I won it.
A guy from DHL called me and offered me and my family match tickets.  I declined as I already had season tickets and although the DHL seats were better seats, I prefer to sit in my regular seats next to my friends.
So, he said to just come up to the DHL suite after the game.  There was food and booze there (which we all dived into) and I presented Tim with a bottle of bubbly. Very nice.

The point is though that the DHL "seat" was probably worth a few hundred quid. As a commercial organisation, I wouldn't begrudge Chiefs if they immediately tried to sell access to all their hospitality immediately that that the current deal expired.

Doesn’t seem to me that Exeter have done much wrong on the face of things. If the tickets aren’t valid, they aren’t valid. I guess it would have been in the small print. Obviously it’s not nice for the people involved to be turned away at the gates at the end of a tough week where they’ve lost their jobs, and I hope it was done as nicely as possible.

It's more just the handling of the aftermath that's a little insensitive - the victims aren't rich Flybe execs, but its recently laid-off employees looking for a small pick-me-up after a no doubt galling week.

I'm also left thinking that it would have made more business sense to let them in anyway - surely those seats just ended up empty, so why not let the poor people in and let them cheer your team? And then potentially encourage them to become longer term fans of the club instead of rubbing salt in their wounds. Unless my assumption is wrong and they re-sold the seats within the day or two between Flybe collapsing and the game.

I'm not sure.
In my view, the people that go on corporate freebees are quite often more interested in the free food / booze than supporting the team.
I know that this is a massive generalisation and it does sound as though one of the victims was a Chiefs fan.

But, if it was my business, I would be grumpy about doling out free champagne to employees of a company that were not going to pay the bill for it.

However, I would agree that the PR handling of the situation could have been better.

Handled badly PR wise but at the same time, rather than the people who were turned away going straight on to twitter afterwards, could they not have taken the time before to ring the club and check whether the tickets were still valid. Don't blame the club but could have handled it better, but the fans could also have shown some initiative themselves rather than going straight to social media afterwards. Tis the world we live in though nowadays

Who thinks of phoning to check if their physical tickets they have in their hands haven't been cancelled?

Exeter handled this pretty poorly.

The story says that the club had told Flybe that the tickets weren’t valid - but presumably Flybe hadn’t told the staff. Exeter say they didn’t know who had the tickets, so it’s not as if they could have contacted them themselves.

...but looking at the shot of the ticket in the article, the match was only 2 days after the collapse of Flybe, and it seems very unlikely that Exeter would have resold the tickets. The shot doesn’t show where the ticket was located or whether it included hospitality, so hard to judge what the value would have been.

It still seems pretty petty - though the article isn’t clear on how many people had these tickets.

Exeter would have had the benefit of flybe sponsorship up to that point so Exeter's reaction seems a little churlish.
As for the vigilantism of social media it really does worry me that one can openly make unsubstantiated claims about whatever which some other people then take at face value.

Exeter handled this pretty poorly.

If I had a freebie ticket issued to a company that had gone bust, I'd take the time to call just to make sure. Same as I would if I had a physical gift voucher for a shop that had gone bust. Evidently a lot of people wouldn't. Oh well
