Taps is a top player and I think you are right in that he has generally been 1st choice when available. However, I do agree that he is a bit of a luxury as a squad player (based on my assumptions about his wages, which could well be wrong) and I would have Esterhuizen as first choice. I like Lasike as second choice.

Also, I'm thinking that he seems to have been a bit injury prone. Like Sailli, he's a quality player - but pragmatically, we aren't really getting great value for them.

On a random, left-field point... I really liked seeing Semi play at centre! I know it was an emergency situation, but could he play a whole game there and do a good enough job?

That would work if he had players around him who could support his runs and read his offloads. What is his defence like though?

It seems strong - pretty brutal at times. You're right about the offloads though; he seems to produce them from nowhere at times.

My main counter to that would be that centre feels like the one position we won't need Semi for if he is still with us next season. So much depth there now. I'd rather just see him get a decent run in the backrow post-Robshaw... Sounds like he's leaving though.

Very good point. I hope he doesn't leave though.

On a similar note, or maybe not so similar, I was thinking back to when Lawrence Dallaglio started at Wasps. He was very quick for a back row, and at times they used to play him on the wing. I think it was partly to surprise the opposition, but also to use his skills, somewhere. Of course wingers were generally a lot smaller then...

I think that was because they wouldn't have to listen to him quite as much.

I remember when we did that with Tom Guest, who would be a decent size for a winger even now.

Tom Guest was a player I was very sad to see go in almost exactly the same way I'll be sad to see Semi go.

True, but he needed more first team game time, and with Minty trucking endlessly on we couldn't give it to him.

Tapuai played 15 Premiership games for us last season. More or less the same he was averaging in at Bath. Generally he’s been first choice when fit and playing nearly 70% of games is not a bad return. It’s only really this season where he’s been injury prone.

Personally I’d keep him, but Lasike’s emergence as a genuine option and subsequent contract extension probably means he’ll be off.

Scrum Half and Fullback are our weakest positions IMO.

Landajo has been rubbish and Saunders’ condition means he’s unlikely to ever be able to cement a place as second choice (I think he can only play a limited number of games). Not many good 9s about TBH.

As for Fullback. Brown”s injury really exposed us. I like Morris but he’s injury prone and isn’t good enough to be a first choice IMO. The less said about Ross Chisholm at 15, the better. Again, not too many obvious targets, but I’d have loved to see us go for Malins. Unfortunately, that ship has sailed.

I would quite like to see is try Lang at 15. He’s probably not likely to be first choice at 10, 12 or 13, but I think he has the ability and the skill set to be a very good option at 15 and given time I think he could be Browny’s successor.

I think Lang and Herron would be good choices if we wanted to try something new (at FB)

I take it back about Tapuai. I didn't realise he'd played so much last season. But as you say, we've got increasing options at centre, and I daresay they are a lot cheaper than Taps.

Scrum half and full back are a quandary. In part, we've been spoiled by having arguably the two best English players in those positions for the best part of a decade. Both seem irreplaceable... but we have to look ahead. I'd still like to see Ruan Combribnck join us! Can't we start waving the cheque book at him?

Scrum half is a tricky one - Faf would have been prefect for us. Bu maybe we need to look at a complete change in the type of player we're looking for? DC is a unique player, so are we trying too hard to find someone similar?

Always thought Tom was underrated. A fantastic athlete for his size and a superb player. I'm not at all biased either, even though we played at for the same club... :)

Reinach would be my dream choice at 9, but obviously he’s off to Montpellier and it’s unlikely he would have left Saints for us.

I also really like John Cooney but he wouldn’t leave Ulster while he’s in the mix for Ireland.

Sonatane Takulua would have been another good signing with experience of the Premiership, but he’s off to Toulon.

The low value of the Rand and relaxed selection policies mean that SA is the best hunting ground. Herschel Jantjies would be a great signing for us, or as a wildcard, I quite liked the look of Embrose Papier when he was on loan at Sale earlier in the season. At 22, he’d be an ideal guy to develop behind Care.
