You are correct, but at the same time I am sure these players have dependents and mortgages themselves.  Not all of them are like Farrell, Itoje, Tuillgi etc

Premiership rugby players are in the upper echelons of earnings. They can afford 25% better than most.

Lots of people are facing wage cuts, or lay offs. What makes rugby players more important?
I have some sympathy for them the same as I do for others, but my company is in dire straights too. All my bookings for the next 3 weeks are already cancelled and the phone hasn't ring for days.....

Rocker, sorry to hear you are facing tough times. But to answer your question... I think people are focussing on the rugby players because this is a rugby forum. They’re not necessarily more important, but sure to be the focus of discussion on here.

Personally I’m a bit void of sympathy for anyone other than those affected by serious health complications (directly or indirectly).

Certainly no sympathy for the likes of Farrell who will be earning a measly 600k instead of his usual 800k basic salary.

Well would what you do for a living get 15,000 people out of their seats at the same time?

Would that apply to doctors and nurses too in your argument?

From the Times

Bath captain Charlie Ewels: No player revolt but cuts not fair on juniors or those in final year
Alex Lowe, Deputy Rugby Correspondent
Monday March 30 2020, 12.00am, The Times

The Bath captain Charlie Ewels insisted his players are not in revolt against the club — but he has raised two specific issues over the club’s decision to implement a 25 per cent pay cut that are reflected across the league.

All Premiership clubs have imposed salary reductions after the season was postponed until at least April 20. They are now examining whether to put players on unpaid leave, as Newcastle Falcons did last week.

Premiership clubs argue they will go bust without taking urgent action, given they face up to six months without any home fixtures. Northampton Saints say each game at Franklin’s Gardens is worth up to £400,000 to them.

Ewels said he supported Bath’s decision to impose the salary cuts but he had raised concerns over the impact on lower-paid squad members and those coming to the end of their contracts.

The same issues apply across the league. There is considerable angst about the way many clubs went about imposing the pay cuts without any form of consultation with the players, given the action amounts to a breach of contract.

Players have been seeking advice from RPA. Those not immediately prepared to accept the pay cuts have been advised to reserve their rights, which would appear to include those in the categories outlined by Ewels.

The RPA, which represents over 700 players, is believed to be trying to seek answers from the clubs.

“We are not in revolt against our club,” Ewels said. “In fact, it’s quite the opposite, we wish to work with the club through this extremely challenging time so we can get back to where we all want to be, playing rugby at the Rec again.

“We play rugby for a living and we understand that if we are not playing games, then there is no money coming in. It is a difficult time for everyone at the club, however, we are all on this journey together.

“We as players understand everything happening across the globe is having a huge impact, and that impact is reaching far beyond us. I can say that I 100 per cent support the principle of the pay cuts, as do the majority of players at the club, believing they are what is right to guide the club through this tough period.

“Like players at all other clubs, we have been guided by the advice of our union the RPA during this hugely uncertain time. We are seeking answers to some specific questions regarding players on lower salaries and players coming to the end of their contracts.

“However, we are discussing these questions openly and transparently with Stuart [Hooper, director of rugby] and Tarquin [McDonald, chief executive] and I know we will find the right answers in due course.”

I think young charlie might have been better to have kept his mouth shut during a time when a fair portion of the people who pay for the season tickets and TV subscriptions which pay those players' wages may have found themselves with no income whatsoever for the next few months...
