Prediction Game - Warm up!
« on: Thursday 19-Jul-2018, 15:07* »
As I volunteered to set up the prediction league on Superbru, I thought it best to use one of the upcoming club competitions in the SH as a way to let people sign up ahead of time to Superbru, get used to how the site works, picking predictions, etc. I suggest that you use the same nickname there as here, just to make it easy.

So, I've set up a pool for the Mitre 10 competition that starts in just under 4 weeks time Here's the link & details. If you've any questions or have any issues, let me know. When the Premiership gets loaded to their site, I'll set up a pool for that, plus ones for the European Cup competitions. I'm not sure they'll do one for the Premiership Cup (AngloWelsh as was) or the Shield (A League) but if they do & people want it, I can do those too. If there's calls for CAW pools for the internationals, I can add them in too.

Pool name: Come All Within - Mitre Cup

Pool code: bornnigh

What is the "Pool code" for?  I didn't get asked for it.

I often wonder that as well! I think it's a hangover from the older system they used to run (SportGuru) that required some sort of authentication to avoid pools being flooded with applicants. It's safe to ignore that ;)

OK - I've added this to the menu on the left. As more pools turn up I'll add them too.

Thanks for putting the link there. I'll announce the pools for each comp as I can set them up. At the moment, I'm just waiting on Superbru to launch each competition!

I'm in. You could just have a single pool name that is in lots of competitions couldn't you?

Yes, but they would still be classed and managed as individual pools per competition. I'm planning on using the same name for the pools, but you will need to join each one separately.

I've no real idea how it works, but I'm signed up.

The goal is to predict the results more accurately than anyone else. Is that right?

In my privacy settings I have chosen to share stuff with "Only registered Superbru users with whom I've shared a private pool in a current or past tournament". Is it a private pool that I've joined?

I signed up as a Waikato supporter, which seems to mean that I'm in the Come All Within pool, but also in a pool with 141 other Waikato followers.

Curious to see what happens next.

You just need to predict the result and points margin of each match within the particular league, you are then awarded points which are compared to others in the CAW pool, and in your case, other Waikato followers. The actual score is not important, which in my opinion, is the main drawback compared to the "old" CAW prediction league.

Curious to see what happens next. You get to see how good you are at picking the outcome compared to other CAW members & Waikato followers!

Points are awarded in four ways:
A Win Point: Awarded for picking the right winner
A Margin Point: Awarded for picking the margin within 5 points. In close games you can even pick up a margin point if you pick the loser, if your prediction was Loser winning by 2 points, and the actual winner won by less than 3 points (or there was a draw)
A Grand Slam point: Awarded for getting all the winners right in a round
Bonus Point: This is a little more complex. A BP is awarded per game to the person closest to the actual result. If 2 people are equally close the point is split between them. For 3 people, they each get 0.33 points, and for 4 or more, it's 0.25pts. Bonus points apply in each individual pool. So, in your case, you'll sometimes get a BP or part of one awarded in the CAW pool, but not in the Waikato pool.

Each round the person in a pool who gets the most points that round gets awarded a virtual Yellow Cap.

Pool rankings are done based on your accumulated points. If two or more people are equal in a pool on Points, they are ranked by who has the lowest TDM (Total Distance Margin) The site keeps track of all your picks & tallies up how far away from the actual result you've been across every game in the whole competition, so the lower that is the better!

Hope that makes sense!

Yes, it makes sense.
Thanks for taking the trouble to explain it.

No Problem! The site's been going for a number of years & runs similar competitions for all sorts of sports, so it's worth having a look around there as there may be other prediction games you want to take part in. Personally, I just do the rugby ones...

The more the merrier! There's still plenty of time to sign up to this pool for the Mitre Cup. Think of it as a bit of fun, as no doubt like me you've no idea about the relative strengths of the NZ club sides.

At the moment I plan on setting up CAW pools for:
Premiership
Challenge Cup
Champions Cup
Top14
Pro14
Autumn Internationals
6 Nations

They're all separate, so you can choose as many or as few competitions as you like.
