Ref gripes
« on: Sunday 14-Apr-2019, 00:28* »
OK, not specific to our game. Sadly, the awful Internet feed meant I saw only part of the game in fits and starts.

But... Two things that caught my eye today, which seem to happen week in, week out. Some teams do it more than others, but I think all teams are guilty to some extent.

1 Being ahead of the kicker from kickoffs and restarts. Players are frequently a metre or two over the line when the ball is kicked.

2 the blatant blocking of runners chasing a kick. It's so obvious that I can't believe it's not picked up more often.

Before we get the usual hue and cry, I'm not blaming today's defeat on the ref. Just having a gripe because laws aren't being applied. There are others too, but these seem to be at the front of my mind tonight.

I agree with both these gripes. SHC was being so deliberate in his attempts to block saints kick chaser I’m shocked he was never penilised.

The other time kick chasers are always offside is from these long rucks and the box kick. By the time the scrum half picks up the ball takes two steps backwards and kicks the chasers are a good 3-4 metres ahead of him.

I guess as everyone does it the refs are consistent so effectively they have changed the laws themselves.

Another one is going on a long run behind several of your own players before emerging where there’s a larger gap.

And another... Players not releasing the ball for the opposition to take a quick lineout. Or blocking the ball from being thrown in.

Neither seems to ever be penalised these days.

The consistency of refereeing is frustrating, I think touchjudges need to get involved more like at international level, the two yesterday didn't seem overly interested in doing much apart from marking the lineout. However they are not the reason Quins lost before I get accused of making excuses.

There was a kick yesterday that looked like it went out on the full but wasn't given. Did it not go out on the full? Or was it from behind the 22?

There was a lineout (ours) where the throw described a perfect pair of b-ollox in our favour and neither the lino or ref said a thing!

One of the AR has a great assist yesterday. A saints player was down and receiving treatment from the physio and as play headed that way the ref blew to stop play getting too close to the physio. Saints complained as they had the ball and the ref said it was to do with the physio getting hit last week and the refs got a lot of stick about it and the clubs asked them to watch out out for it. The AR then chirped in to say the physio who got hit last week was at Saints as well. Did make us chuckle.

Specific to our game was the comedy non-call for a wonky lineout that went to Clifford. It was the worst I've ever seen of that ilk.

Unfortunately there are plenty of laws they seem to turn a blind eye to and others they analey adhere too
