Owen Slot in Times says that Premiership Rugby are trying to stop relegation this season and next season we go with 13 clubs. How can you change the rules in the current season?

When you're the people who make the rules.

This is the third time Owen's written this up very strongly so he's clearly got very good sources.

I wonder if this would tie in with Gustard deciding he wants quality over quantity in the squad.  You clear out the dead wood, you bring in some quality players but a smaller squad. Yes there is a risk that injuries take hold and you are forced to throw in a few academy lads but in reality, who cares.  They get some first team experience, there is no danger of going down.  The reward outweighs the risk. If you have luck with injuries you could find yourself top four, if you dont, you put it down as one of those seasons and move on to next year.

It'll be interesting to see how many academy players he gives contracts to when they finish school. I think our academy has been producing poorer results than several years ago.

Is this with a view to getting Irish back up then ring fencing? Didn't they get rid of the playoffs too?

I agree QP , one of the arguments used in favour of ring fencing is that it allows Prem teams to invest in academy without the fear of relegation meaning it will be disbanded . ( seemed to be David Ellis' only argument when pressed on his evening with Nick Mullins)

Hope they don't pull up the drawbridge though , for many reasons , but importantly I can see it spelling disaster for the private funding of those left in the Championship and Nat leagues.

In Evening Standard to day 'Steve Hill director of Rugby Richmond, believes a ring fenced Premiership inevitable'. Financial difference between Champ and Prem huge. Finishes by mentioning London Welsh and London Irish and talk about relegation being exciting etc. Can not find link on this to show you all.

Final para in ES article quoting Steve Hill 'In the current Championship besides LI , who really wants to go up? I do not think Ealing really want to go up. If they did , would they have got rid of their best coach , Alex Cod ling at the start of the season?. They have one of the smallest attendances in the Championship'.

I'm not sure they "got rid" of Codling. Strange choice of words.
