Given their history they wouldn't be promoting that.....they like to bury bad news.

It could very well be Ring Fencing... This was just tweeted by the guys at the Eggchasers Podcast:

Would that be a 13 team Prem, meaning a bye week each week for someone, or will it be 14??

Shame for the clubs like Ealing that had hopes of getting promoted.

I guess that'll mean that there's one less "cannon fodder" team in the Challenge Cup, but more pools containing two teams from the same country, which is a shame.

From what I can see of the Telegraph report, it will be from the end of NEXT season, not the end of this season. Makes sense, given that the schedule's already tight for next season with the RWC...

Sorry if I am being thick here, does that mean that even if Falcons finish second they will still be the 13th side as they are a stakeholder in the Prem???

Nope, it's a fair question to ask. It *should* be whoever wins the Championship next season, whether that's Falcons, Ealing, Cornish Pirates, Jersey, etc. I have a sneaking suspicion that if they come second, there'll be some finagling around criteria to ensure that whoever won wasn't allowed to come up. That said, Newcastle must be favourites to win by quite a margin at the moment.

I thought the idea that this would be operative from the 2019/20 season - i.e. Falcons aren't getting relegated after all and Irish are coming up. Door closed. Does the Telegraph article suggest it's going to be from 2020/21 instead?

EDIT: Sorry, just saw Fred's post. Let's see if the Telegraph is right. Could be interesting if they are...

In that case, I wonder if a few of the sides mentioned (Ealing, Pirates) may try and go balls deep to boost their squads for next season. Ealing have done some decent business already
