I don't want to throw water on the fires of enthusiasm but let's just take a reality check.

following a potential career ending injury, surgery and long rehabilitation he has not been able to play for a season.  He now has the uphill task of regaining confidence in the damaged leg and returning to match fitness.  We have seen in other players just how difficult this is and the risk of sustaining further damage is very high.

In this scenario why would any other club take this player on, particularly when there is so much uncertainty in the game just now.  Earle is never going anywhere soon, not until he has demonstrated beyond all doubt that he has the speed and physical capacity to get back on the wing in a meaningful way.

I do recognise that my description of the returning player from injury could easily have applied to Saili when he transferred to us.  That didn't work out quite a well as planned.

Valid points. The same could be said of Brown.

Ross Chisholm had a similar issue and has never looked as good as he used to. Other players come back seemingly 100%. Fingers crossed Earle is in the latter category.

JQT, coming back from a bad injury is always a risky time for club and player. Robshaw and Lambo managed it, Jonny Wilkinson and Manu Tuilagi managed it eventually, Lawrence Dallaglio managed it by coming back a very different player, Ross Chisholm came back a diminished one, George Lowe and Will Skinner didn't manage it at all.

Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. One of the big factors in recovery is how the player approaches it, and their own club is generally best placed to judge that. But it's hard to tell if the injury will hold up.

That said, we used to be really good at rehabilitating players, and able to take a chance on other teams' crocks. Ollie Kohn was coming back from a knee reconstruction when he joined Quins, and we took him from a journeyman with a bad injury record to an international with a career-ending injury record (thanks, Wozza).

Maybe it was a good deal for both parties. He’s on a reduced rate for a year to prove himself back to top form. No other team would come in for him in the current circumstances. He was top quality, he seems to have the right drive and attitude so let’s give him the chance.

Poorfour, cracking post.

It really underlines the dangers of the game that we find so entertaining.  I wish Earles well in his recovery and hope he can scale the heights demonstrated by just a few of those you have listed.

Great news, out of all the injuries we’ve had this season in the backs, he’s been the biggest miss. His pace and power compared to our other options is so much better. Him, lasike and Esterhuizen in the same backline would cause carnage.

Agree these serious injury always present a risk, but he has had a long injury layoff before and returned well from it so hopefully he can do so again

I may be in the minority here, but whilst I really like Earle as a player, I felt that he didn't always use his size and power to full effect. He is big for a winger, and I always expect him to break through tackles; sometimes he seems to not back himself though. I may be wrong of course. I do agree hat he's a very good player and definitely adds something to the backline.
