Slightly O/T: TMO Trial during the AIs
« on: Thursday 04-Oct-2018, 09:16* »
So, it looks like World Rugby are tinkering again in the Autumn Internationals. Bottom line seems to be less chat in live play, especially from the TMO to the Ref. I just wish they'd finalise the TMOs role & stick with it!

I find that when the best refs refer to TMO without stopping the game it works really well. So I hope they are not going to change this.

I sort of get that because the ref must think he should refer anything that he could possibly either have missed or be wrong about, which makes the TMO more of a referee than just a tool for the ref to use.

I like the "ref on the run" chat. He's following the ball, but sees something out the corner of his eye, says to the TMO "check that", and either gets told it's nothing or something happened that needs attention. If he has to wait for the next break in play to stop and ask the TMO, it's too late or else the teams stand round for two minutes while the TMO reviews. How is that an improvement?

The other advantage of the ref on the run is that quick conversions canít negate the TMO.

I'm amazed they didn't do away with the quick conversions thing over the summer. Obviously quick conversions should still be allowed if you're trying to save time to get back into a game (though in that case the team who are winning just walk very slowly back to the halfway line anyway) but they shouldn't be a means of getting away with a dodgy try. If a ref sees a team trying to go quickly he should just blow the whislte and call time off.

I heard a comment while watching a match within the last few weeks that the quick-conversion thing didn't count any more and that now the ref can refer to the tmo whether the kick has been taken or not.  I tried googling it but I didn't find any conclusive evidence to support or dispute this.

Wasn't that during all the booing at our last home game? They went for the quick conversion, but the ref said he hadn't seen it (and the ARs weren't in position properly behind the posts either. Then there was the protracted hoo-ha about whether to check for the impediment of Earle on the defensive line therefore it wouldn't stand?

Maybe - or it may have been during the quick kick that Bristol took after their try
