Smith - not ready?
« on: Saturday 25-Aug-2018, 08:20* »
Final few weeks of last season I was worried about Smith - last night did nothing to dispel those worries.

He just doesnít look ready for Premiership rugby. Feels like he expects his every touch to be golden like when he was a kid and itís not happening and heís not got the control and experience to manage the game in the absence of being flash.

Given the vacuum of info around The Cat - worries me going into the season.

Thoughts?

Depends by what you mean ready?

Iím expecting a second year academy player to continue to learn his craft - regardless of his promotion to the senior squad - thatís what he is.

He will only learn through playing, as seen by so
Many up and coming players who have arrived at Quins and been starved of game time....

Last year he was able to control games and I think started off playing a bit within himself. DC seemed to manage the game to let him do his thing. It went down hill when DC went off to england and Marcus had less support IMHO.

He either learns or he doesnít - no one (I hope ) is thinking he is the finished article....

I agree that he is not ready or the finished article. Lang looked much more at ease at ten yesterday and had more control of the game.

Yes MS needs more game time to learn and develop but we canít afford to have that be the case all season long at one of if not the most important positions.

Letís hope the coaches have a plan to develop him and keep the team competitive.

On the whole, I agree. Smith is a genuine talent though and while he is some way off being the finished article, I have no doubt he will get there.

No other clubs have placed this level of reliance on a 10 of his age, mainly because theyíve had a more established first choice which has allowed the up-and-coming player to develop their game more gradually.

Most clubs nurture their young 10s, weíve thrown Smith in at the deep end. For example, Joe Simmonds is 22 and has made 29 appearances for Exeter. Marcus is 19 and has already made 28 appearances which will also include a much higher percentage of starts than Simmonds and more in the Premiership/ECC.

I hope weíll reap the benefits of this in the long term, but in the short term, Smith is basically learning on the job so there are bound to be games where his inexperience is exposed.

Iím not sure Iíd have Lang starting ahead of him though.

Yeah, very odd. It's like people have forgotten last year completely.

I analysed the first 16 games of the season we marked for performances and he was only behind Robshaw.

Last night he looked 'bulkier' than last season - probably been pushing the weights during pre-season to cope with the big hits, but I'm not sure that always suits a player whose pace is one of his main strengths.

Think Lang at the moment should start over Smith at 10 as he gives you more with the boot and looks less raw. After all it was Lang who was at 10 when we beat Sarries in December.

I think it's harsh to base Smith's readiness on just one game. A player of his age and experience will always be learning, especially at fly half. It's whether he's good enough yet, and I think last season showed that he is. It is good that we have options - Cat, Lang, Swiel - and hopefully that will help him and us even more.

He was utter garbage the end of the season and was also last night. Slow, out of position and throwing bad passes
