If he chases the money it’ll be a mistake for his career coz he’s not going to get more rugby anywhere else that can pay him more.

As a talented young player he's always going to have offers from other clubs, contract or no contract.   If we want him to stay at Harlequins we've got to make it attractive financially and from a sporting perspective.

I thought he was given a 6 figure salary. For a 19 year old he was offered a very attractive package which he obviously accepted. Will other clubs try and up the ante?  Sad day for bringing on young talent if clubs are tryng to break contracts  and/or outbidding each other so early in their careers.

Sad maybe, but how the world works.

I feel more BS speculation from the media.
Whilst I appreciate the irony of posting this on an internet fan site I do think that the internet does not neccesarily do much good for the world in many ways.

Yep, all good points above. He's no where near the finished article yet and the top 4 clubs won't have him as their starting 10, he'll get more game time here and in an environment that will support him. If he has a bad run, we'll be more understanding if he goes elsewhere for big money then he'll get less support.

He's a nice well balanced lad but then so was Cipriani at this age and look what happened there!

I wouldn't compare Cipriani and Smith, they seem very different and Cip's was 16 when his ego was inflated and the starting 10 by 19/20.
I think he is a prime example of what can go wrong if you dont have people around you looking after you.
This is something Smith currently has at quins i would hope and another reason he is almost not looking for a move.

I have said this before fisser has made a comment based on a contract and nothing else really, all clubs would be interested in a talent like Smith, that doesn't mean Smith is interested in a move away from Quins.

I also think it's bad PR for a player to be seen as someone chasing the paycheck. The majority of rugby players still seem to value loyalty, as do the fans.

Speaking to people who know the Smith family, they all confirm that Marcus is a sensible lad supported by well grounded parents.

I'd be very surprised if he would 'chase the money' so early on in his career, especially as he is still close to his family, who i believe are guiding him at this stage.

Who knows if a few years time, when he has a manager and he takes more control of his decisions, he may want to  move.

I don't believe he will get any where near as much game time this year, which may have an influence ?

He's a Quin for at least 2-3 years.

I'd be gobsmacked if Smith did'nt have a 'manager/agent' now. All of the Academy lads I know (6+) had an agent within the 1st year of their Academy contract. Agents are sniffing around well before the lads are signed, then it's just a matter of which one do you want to go with.

I believe at 19 his parents have a greater influence on him and any manager, than they will when he's 22

I don't disagree with you on that but I still believe he'll have an agent/manager now advising, as they know the game and 'nuances' that can be included in any contract, the majority of parents don't.

I think it's very unlikely he would change this close to the start of a season. For a flyhalf in particular, being part of pre-season and learning the attacking patterns is a major part of preparing to be part of a team, so missing out on that sets you back a lot in terms of game time, barring an injury crisis.
