Tom Buck Quin I think you have mis-understood Billy Millard is admin and will get the players Mr Gustard wants he will not go off and just recruit his own people. Although he might bring someone to his attention. I don’t understand how you can suddenly throw away any semblance of defence - think George Lowe days. Basic spacial awareness should be a given in rugby the Baa Baas manage a ‘sort of defence’ in days. Last season we saw good defence to start and then it fell apart due to lack of fitness. Maybe they should go back to basics and purchase meters or yards of elastic to keep them all together.

It's a lot to do with the on-field mentality. How do you respond to a setback? Jan to May 2018, Quins always looked up for games and were competitive for the first half. However, when things went wrong  (conceding a try/losing a man) the boys took it hard and then looked susceptible to conceding again and again. Which seems to have been the case on Saturday as well.

It, therefore, needs a bit of mental toughness and determination from the boys. A collective belief that 'that won't happen again', and then making sure it doesn't! Easier said than done, I know!

I have a lot of faith and belief in the players and am optimistic about Gustard's approach. The team can always have 'Remember Glasgow' as their warning catchphrase when adversity comes their way next season!

As fans, we can give the boys a huge lift in the next two games. All summer the talk has been about how amazing the atmosphere is at the Stoop. I am excited about getting back there!

Yeah it’s odd - maybe because it’s the last one before the season, home game, presume we’ll start close to our first XV???

Seems odd certainly

I too looked at the highlights and it was identical to the second half of the season.

As soon as our heads drop, at whatever point of the game, the opposition score again (and again and again).

I naively thought that the new coaching set up would improve the defence straight away, but clearly this has something to do with what is inside the players heads.

There seems to be a lack of a real leader, both when the internationals are playing and when they are not. I seem to remember at the start of last season Marcus Smith in the middle of the huddle shouting at everyone. I never see senior players do that!

Not trying to be too controversial but i do think there is a clique amongst the senior players, which in my opinion has affected the whole squad since we won the premiership.

Should we have let some of the 'big names' go at the end of last season?

We have been doing joint training sessions with Ealing.

With all due respect, I think if anyone's confused it's you. Billy Millard essentially oversees "elite performance" at the club. If anyone is accountable when it comes to ensuring the tone and culture is right and making sure everything is in place to get the best out of the coaching and playing staff then it's him. Recruitment is only a small part of that and is arguably all done for this season, we already have elite training facilities... So then I'm looking to see what else can be done to squeeze every drop of talent out of whichever group of players take the field each week - and I realise that's brought us full circle to the question Blucher initially opened this thread with, but it's a question for Millard I'd argue.

If you are going to base all of your ussumptions on the highlights, well nothing has changed
However in the first half we looked on a level footing with Glasgow
The fact that they had 12 capped players and we had 6 maybe has something to do with it, also think that if we had played a full strength side with our first team result would have been different
But simple fact is I don’t see how Marcus is meant to stop a 6ft plus forward who’s about 2 foot from the try line
Also don’t see how you can stop certain players spilling the ball or making stupid passes in our own 22 when under pressure
The same things still need fixing from last season, and for anyone to think Gussy and co have a magic  wand to turn everything around are delusion .

I have seen/heard/read something about Gustard having a bear in the training room.

For my money this might just as well be a completely new team - give the amount of injuries we had in the last year.  I cant think that we had a regular team sheet - week in weeek out.  We've also lost a number of players - I think that I'm right - (four) retired through injury plus the usual that are moved on.
PG has a tough job ahead of him but in some respects he's also got a completely fresh start.  Lets give him time AND LETS GET BEHIND THE TEAM.

It is really quite worrying that we did not play Jersey off the pitch, we just did enough.  Then onto a heavy loss v Glasgow.  For me even thumping Ealing by 50+ points wont show we’ve progressed.

Now that all said I think we will not see too much change in 1st half of the season it will be slow gains and small margins.  Why do i say this well when fatigue sets in during las 20 you revert to type and our ‘type’ is not good at all.  We need to get back to how we were with Deano, and he didn’t do it over night.

I’m still quite confident we have the players and the right staff. I sense some good signings for next season.

I’m not sure I have much to add that hasn’t already been said?

Leadership is sorely lacking. When Horwill is not playing, there are very few who will step up to lead, which is a real concern considering our last three captains are often present on the pitch.

Sure Mike Brown will shout an berate his team mates, but I’m talking about a motivator and an organiser which we don’t really have. Robshaw is the obvious choice to take on that role, but these days I rarely see him do so. Even if he does, we don’t have an equivalent in the backs.

I think attitude has a massive part to play in defence and right now that bear looks like Gentle Ben. We’re disorganised, too passive and lack aggression. Hopefully Gustard can sort out the organisation but commitment and aggression need to come from the team on the pitch.

Sale will be a big game. They are an ambitious team, but probably competing for top 6 rather than top 4. We should be aspiring to beat them at home. A win would be a huge boost and, rightly or wrongly, a loss would set a bad tone.

Despite the try fest by Warriors, in the two matches I have watched so far this season the defensive line has in general worked well. The line stays as a line, is very quickly up on the attacking team and quite aggressive. Clearly there are still issues but the improvement is there to be seen.

I'd say that was happening last season as well.  I think it's like the offside trap in footie.  It works well until somebody gets through. Then we're short of cover of sufficient quality to prevent scores.  A couple of Glasgow's tries came from multiple missed tackles.  I'm not saying they were easy to make but you'd hope that at least one would slow the player down or force a new phase.

Glasgow had a good offloading game with support runners - like we used to do years ago - and once somebody broke the line they often had support with them.

I actually don't think that the defensive line is even close to our biggest issue.  The lineout would be my top problem area.  Wasted attacking opportunities and inability to relieve the pressure when close to our own line is a bigger one.  That and the whole fool for hands when under pressure :)
