I had naively assumed our problem was largely the Jk led coaching team and there was little wrong with the players.Bring in a new coaching team and the players would enthusiastically respond. As others have said it is becoming apparent of a deeply ingrained cultural issue at all levels starting with DE who frankly is deluded that we are progressing nicely.Am beginning to wonder whether splitting the DOR role into 2 is the right answer. No one solely responsible for developing genuine team spirit and sense of purpose and oneness.

How did that get past the word police?

If this is what this place is like after a couple of pre season games I hate to think what it's going to be like when we lose a competitive game.

The difficulties are there for all to see. Gustard has had a few weeks with the players, I expect to see an improvement on last year but I'm not expecting miracles. Certainly not going to make big judgments on the coaching team before the season starts. Sale and the first few games will be a barometer, not pre season. I get that after the last few years we're all seriously nervous about another season of poor basics, malfunctioning line out and embarrassing defensive errors and don't get me wrong, I am too! But... I'm not planning on starting the full on panic just yet, more slightly concerned.

Apparently hooker is now OK. I've pointed out the mammary issue to the powers that be. (Who seem much more responsive than on the sportnetwork board.)

agree with A222Quin above - everyone needs to take a chill pill  - this is pre-season - yes not great against Glasgow but that was not our first 15 and change takes time - give the team etc a few premiership games and then see where we are :-0

Just to be clear I wasn't having a massive downer on the season in starting the thread.

It was more watching Glasgow and being reminded of our mental frailty and failures at the tackle and breakdown. I'm v positive about the new era, but think it could take a lot of time to fix.

It was a proper pondering over the psychology of sport, team morale, group-think, whatever really we think ended up at the stage where we're so fragile that any sign of our tactics not working, we fall apart.

Can't wait for Friday!

Sorry Bluercher but didn’t you recently say “ Relegation fodder” or was that someone else?

I’ll start to panic if we get a kicking from Sale at home followed by a loss away to Saints
Until the season starts for sure with more of the first choice I don’t think there’s a great deal we can learn from pre season.
I’m hoping Gussy giving everyone a good run out to work out who’s match fit and wants to play first game

Yeah, everyone concedes 50 points in friendlies, not sure what we can learn from preseason.

So do we write the whole season off based on pre season Rodney?
Is that the team we will see run out on a regular basis in the premiership?
Yes the result was a howler, but let’s get a grip and panic when it’s necessary

How about this for a provocative answer? (as in intended to provoke debate rather than upset someone).  Maybe the question though well intended is slightly wrong.  It implies that the COS way of playing is still right and we just need to "fix" some things and we'll do well.  Maybe we need a whole new style of play?  If so this will take time and we might go through a rough patch at first.  A bit like when we were promoted under Deano. If I recall correctly we lost the first 6 games and were seriously in trouble (I remember going to Bristol and letting in over 50 points).  But then we started to click and eventually finished 8th.  This was the basis of the team that went on to win the league.  I suspect this season might be similar

Nothing needs "fixing". Season hasn't started. Post your doom and gloom after 1st September!

Again, it's not doom and gloom about this season. It's that we were clearly psychologically in a very bad place last season and again against Glasgow. So hence wondering what it is that happened that Gustard will now (hopefully) fix.

But do you really think nothing needs fixing? That's the whole point of this discussion (or it was meant to be..). I think there's a vast amount of work to be done - not just "new bloke turns up and our list of great players will suddenly nail it".

Glasgow are a good team with some serious depth.  Away from home we were competitive for 40 minutes and then with changes fell off the pace.  Gussy has inherited a team and the couple of signings suggests to me that we are looking for greater strength and ball carrying.  There are no instant fixes but when we have a 1st XV that is our strongest on the pitch that is the time to compare.

I am hopeful of a brighter future.  COS inherited a team from Deano that was built from scratch.  Things started to go wrong when the likes of Ollie Kohn and JJ stopped playing for us.  They helped to provide front foot rugby.  If we can get back to that we will stand a chance to be competitive.

Friday should be a training session and some match practice but little more.  If we don't manage to string phases of play together regardless of the team selected that may give me concern.
