HARLEQUINS ANNOUNCE SQUAD FOR 2018 PREMIERSHIP RUGBY SEVENS
Thursday, 26th July 2018 @ 11:00

CALUM WATERS WILL CAPTAIN THE 12-MAN SQUAD AGAINST SALE SHARKS AND BRISTOL BEARS IN POOL D.

Harlequins have selected a youthful and exciting squad for this year’s Premiership Rugby Sevens held at Franklin’s Gardens on Friday 27th and Saturday 28th July.

Led by Academy graduate scrum-half Calum Waters, the side includes several burgeoning talents from the London club’s ranks, including several who have played sevens internationally.

Alongside Waters, Academy members Cadan Murley, Max Coyle, Harry Barlow will provide the threat out wide with former centre Jake Hennessey in the midfield.

To complement the more experienced players, a number of young players will start for Quins for the first time at senior level, including new Academy signing Jack Kenningham and former Harlequins U18 star Femi Sofalorin.

Harlequins Academy Coach Warren Abrahams said of the selection: “I am really excited about this young squad who will represent the Club this weekend. This tournament is a great platform for these players to display their skill set and test themselves against some of the best players that have recently come through England’s Academy pathway.”

“It’s undoubtedly going to be a tough two days, but I am confident this group will live up to the Quins values throughout.”

The tournament sees the 12 Gallagher Premiership clubs split into four pools of three. After playing the other teams in the pool once, the top two teams from each pool progress into the quarter-finals of the Cup on the Saturday.

The losers of the four quarter-finals will progress to the semi-finals of the plate while the four teams that finish third in the pool go into the semi-finals of the bowl, again, on the Saturday.

Harlequins play their first pool match against Bristol Bears at 19:00 on Friday evening, and their second against Sale Sharks at 20:30.

The Premiership Rugby 7s will be broadcast live on BT Sport with highlights available on Channel 5.

Problem is that one or two teams will take it seriously and send a strong squad. I seem to recall Wasps had a number of first team players turning out last season.

Looking at the squads it seems a lot more even this year.

From our squad, Coyle, Murley and Hennesey were in the U18s winning side with Smith.  I know Murley has been playing on DR for Esher last season and Eng u18/20.  Hennesey left but has been playing for Cambridge (I think) and England sevens.  Kenningham played a few games in the A League last season and was in the London Floodlight sevens squad.   Lennox Anyanwu has just been named in the Eng u18 squad to tour SA and Barlow is joining the academy this season, think he was involved in the u18s last season.

Of the others, a quick google shows Femi Sofalorin was in our u 18s and plays for Scotland age groups, not sure who he plays for now.  Charlie Kingham and Fergus Guiry have been involved in the England sevens set up.

Not surprising that we're putting a very junior team in this year. New DoR, new coaching structure - it would be pretty daft to give up any time with the senior squad before the season proper begins.

I agree , most of these youngsters have good experience at a high level , a lot of it in 7's - so Im sure they will do us proud .  The last thing we need is moving the focus of any of the 1st XV onto 7's before the season .

Fingers crossed no injuries , but I think it was in these 7's that Jonas Mikalcius got injured last season and he missed the whole season .

Absolutely. The entire First XV, XXX even XLV should be excused all involvement with Sevens.

This is exactly what this comp is for blood some youth with freedom to express themselves and hopefully they’ll snatch a few A league games and progress well.  The likes of Smith and Ibetoye (spelling ??) need rest they’ll both feature heavily this season.

I'm not so sure we'll see Jonas again. Don't remember any injury updates on him last season and haven't seen him around for a while or in any pics either. I would'nt be surprised if it was a career ending injury even though it did'nt look too serious at the time.

Postscript, guess I should have checked, still listed as a player on the offy so I guess he's still around and expected to make a full recovery.

I believe he was expected to take the whole season to recover last year. He's no longer listed on the Hartbury College site where he was dual registered as part of their squad, so it's possible he's back with us permanently. Here's hoping he's recovered & can use the coming season to get back into competition for a place.
