Surplus To Requirements
« on: Saturday 22-Sep-2018, 10:27* »
Gustard is settling in - it's not his squad apart from a couple of late additions so based on team news so far. Who do we think will be surplus to requirements.

Keeping Lang is important and as a result letting The Cat go - makes sense - he hasn't played.
Luamanu - think his days are numbered - no real loss
Visser - doesn't seem to fit - which is a shame
Lewis is a constant A-Leaguer so far - never done anything for me Mulchrone offers so much more
Alofa Alofa - not getting any love - a useful squad player - covers across the back line

Anyone else??

I disagree somewhat with your choices:

Cat - We need three FH options, particularly now both Lang and Smith are on the fringes of their respective national squads. Add in injury possibilities and (assuming he does come back & play a number of games well enough) I'd keep Cat
Luamanu - Depends on whether he's seen as a useful backrow/lock cover. See how he fares over the season in both roles & how much gametime we get out of Horwill.
Visser - This is a strange case. Last year he was our highest try scorer. This season he's completely out of the picking. Remember he retired from Scotland duty to focus on club rugby too. If he isn't getting picked regularly, then I assume he'll move on rather than being pushed. He wants to play, but Gussie doesn't seem to want to use him.
Lewis - Seems never to have made the step up to threaten DC the way that Karl Dickson did. Let him leave, Mulchrone as you say is a good back up & maybe offer more game time to Waters.
Alofa - Need to see how he works paired with our new centres to see if we can use him effectively before deciding whether to keep him I'd say...

I wonder if there will be a place for Clifford in future. He will need to demonstrate that he is not a sicknote this season.

I think it is a bit too early yet to be certain on this.  I do think (hope) that Lewis will be off though.  Keep Cat, as said above, we need FH cover with Lang and Smith lurking on the fringes of their int sides (plus Lang plays centre).   Visser, I still think he will play an important role for us this season.

I would like to see if Cat , Saili and perhaps even Clifford get back and have a meaningful contribution

Recent long term injuries haven't gone well .. Winston Stanley , George Lowe spring to mind , and Sam Twomey and Harry Sloan still aren't troubling the selectors at Irish and Ealing respectively

As you've said in the OP PG doesn't seem too keen on Lewis Visser Alofa Luamanu - I would add Archie White to that list .

I think Luamanu is a good back up second row -ours seem to be made of china recently

Cat - can’t see him playing again for us.A shame as not his or the clubs fault
Saili - will never play again for us, he never played for Munster as he was always injured, whoever signed him must have also signed Cronje

I understand players get injured, like Cat, but signing Saili was a joke.

I’m sorry but I don’t see how you can be so sure on Saili, I have to disagree with that. I respect your view of course, but think of Jonny Wilkinson for an example. He was more injury prone than a crash dummy yet picked himself back up each time, through determination and hard work, got himself back on the horse after every injury he faced. Some parts of his career were more blighted by injury than others, but in his last couple of years if I remember he went pretty much injury free (serious injury’s anyway). To say he will never play for us again is ludicrous. Anyway, let’s hope he plays and proves to be a good selection headache for PG once back fit and playing again

I think we'll see a big clear out coming and some Quins stalwarts leaving over the next two seasons. PG won't accept rubbish and unlike JK has no connection to the former glories of DC, MB, Robbo, Marler etc.

I really think he'll look to build around Smith, Lang, Marchant, Earle in the backs and as for the forwards I think they'll all be playing for new contracts as I've seen nothing from any of them apart from Chis SNR.

I wonder if you're the same poster who said last season that Sailli would never play for Quins. Then he did.

They're injured. It happens. Every player gets injuries, some short-term and some long-term; relatively few injuries are career-ending.

Saying Cat and Siali won’t play again is overly pessimistic however I would be surprised to see them regularly
