HARLEQUINS HAVE ANNOUNCED THE SIDE THAT WILL TRAVEL TO FRANKLIN’S GARDENS TO FACE NORTHAMPTON SAINTS ON FRIDAY 1 NOVEMBER IN THE GALLAGHER PREMIERSHIP.

Head of Rugby Paul Gustard has rotated the squad maintaining 16 players from last week’s 22-17 victory over Bristol Bears at The Stoop, joined by seven players making their first Gallagher Premiership appearance of the season.

Club stalwart Mark Lambert links up with Simon Kerrod and Elia Elia in the front three with Scott Baldwin and Will Collier taking a role as Game Changers. James Chisholm and Alex Dombrandt start alongside Captain Chris Robshaw who moves across to open side in the back row.

South African winger Travis Ismaiel will get his first run out in the Gallagher Premiership, with the side’s top try scorer so far this season Gabriel Ibitoye starting at 11.

Italian centre Michele Campagnaro is set to make his Harlequins debut, having been named as a Game Changer.

Scrum half Charlie Mulchrone is in line to make his final appearance for the Club before hanging up his playing boots as he continues his transition into coaching at Quins.

Head of Rugby Paul Gustard said “We’re pleased with the progress made from the squad and we are constantly energised by the attitude and aptitude of the players. It has and is always my intention to rotate the team and ensure that we encourage squad harmony and cohesion by giving people opportunities in the shirt for those that train with the positivity, energy and determination that we want.

“We have recruited and retained a good depth and balance in our squad and whilst two of our standouts for example from the opening two fixtures in Tom Lawday and Will Evans are rotated out, we are excited and delighted to include the significant talents of James and Alex. We believe in the squad we have at the Club and I need to find a way to give game time to players, without compromising the flow and rhythm of the team. On top of the current dynamic we are also steadily integrating some of our Rugby World Cup representatives back at the club and Campo is in line for his Club debut on Friday. He’s a strong and powerful player who has settled in well with the squad, and our attacking style of rugby.

“Friday will be Charlie Mulchrone’s last game for Quins, but it will not be the end of his involvement with the Club as he moves into his coaching transition role. We look forward to helping him develop into a first-class coach by mentoring and supporting our academy players. We thank Charlie for everything in his time playing for Harlequins and we hope he enjoys a very special bow out on Friday.”

Thats a really good side.  I like this approach from PG, bit of rotation.  Keeps people on their toes.  The front row getting reward for last week.  Dombrandt and baby Chisholm starting.  Been talk about why they are not involved etc.  Sometimes I think you just have to take it for what it is.  We have a very good squad now, we can mix n match, gives blokes a break etc.

I completely agree in principle. I guess I'm interested to see if it works in practice across the season as a whole - I can't think of too many sides that have used this approach, if we are indeed talking about constant rotation week-to-week. In theory though, I can't see how it can be a bad thing - and I'm sure there will be players like Sinckler, Symons, Robshaw, Smith, Marchant, Brown etc. who, when fit, will play - and provide a spine of the team that you attach different "bones" to depending on the opposition you're facing.

PG will have his "Best" 15/23 for the big games.  In truth, how often does a team get to put out their best side due to injury??  I would say that this kind of rotation will make it more possible to put that best side out, we will not see players being asked to play with little knocks here etc.  Should keep the players fresh and, when given a go raring to take it.  He has shown he rewards good performances so when you get the gig, you know you have to take it as the next chance might be a few weeks away.

I like the selection, and I like the logic behind it. Strong bench too. The strength of depth we now have is unrecognisable from previous seasons. This also bodes well for player welfare and longevity.

I missed that announcement.

Great to see the rotation. On top of other comments above, it should also ensure that everyone is able to play with everyone - so when someone is injured/unavailable, their replacement will be able to step in seamlessly and the team will not falter.

p.s. I hardly recognise any of that Saints squad!

Good to see Chis and Dombrandt back in.

Best of luck to Charlie in his last game and those making their premiership / club debuts.

I do like the idea of rotating. In the past, we've played the full strength team wherever possible and then thre's been an injury and the person coming in is not up to scratch. Probably most obvious with Nev's replacements, but same to an extent with Robshaw, Brown and Care

I like that team. Some risk in picking it but the pack can battle and it rests some key players. Think we have a great chance to win away at an in form side.

Think next week we will hopefully see Saili and
or Camps to rest Marchant and Tapua, and the Fijians being filtered in. Care is clearly nearly back as well, if this is planned to be Charlie's last match

Quins to Silence Franklin’s Gardens

In 48 hours the game is on,
Saints vs Quins up at Northampton.

Confidence that Northampton will be put through the mangle,
With focus and drive, a slowly applied STRANGLE.

A strong start, 15 men quick out of the gate,
A game plan, perfectly executed and Saints will SUFFOCATE.

Poise, style, brutally and balance

I think I'm right in saying that Andrew Symons, the Northampton centre, is our Matt's younger brother. So a good family battle ahead (memories of the Dixon brothers getting stuck in in previous Quins/Northampton battles).
