Team vs Falcons
« on: Friday 04-Jan-2019, 12:00* »
HARLEQUINS FULL-BACK MIKE BROWN WILL BREAK THE CLUB’S ALL-TIME APPEARANCE RECORD ON SATURDAY WHEN HE TAKES HIS PLACE IN THE STARTING XV AT NEWCASTLE FALCONS (KICK-OFF: 15:00).

Brown broke Nick Easter’s record for most appearances in the professional era last season, but when he runs out for Quins for the 308th time at the weekend he will be breaking the all-time record set by Grahame Murray in 1973.

Brown said: “I never thought I would achieve this honour when I first started out at Quins. I was a wild card to even get in the Academy in the first place [in 2005] but here I am now and I am really proud.”

The back line has one change from the one that started Big Game against Wasps with the exciting Gabriel Ibitoye starting at Left wing while Cadan Murley has been rested.

Danny Care will captain the side in the absence of James Chisholm, who is rotated, with the in-form Alex Dombrandt moving to Number eight and Semi Kunatani joining the back row at Blindside alongside the consistently impressive Jack Clifford.

Head of Rugby Paul Gustard said: “Mike Brown thoroughly deserves every accolade he gets for all the records he has broken at this club. His career here is already remarkable and I look forward to him going on to achieve even more great things with us. He is a fierce competitor who simply loves playing for Quins and consistently delivers effort, tenacity and high levels of skill with and without the ball.

“James Chisholm has been a mainstay in the team at Number eight all season and has captained the team in the continued absence of Chris and James but like others before him he has been rotated out, allowing an opportunity to others to impress and move the jersey and the shirt on.

“We were pleased with our win over Wasps at Big Game 11 last week despite not being at our best, but we found a way to get the result through our defensive resilience and grit. We have been working hard all week on sharpening our attack, strengthening our set-piece and hardening our defence as we know Falcons are a good team, who are well coached and who, as always, will offer a stern challenge at Kingston Park.

“In order to move up this very tight Premiership we know we have to go back-to-back and get more wins on the road and that starts with the first game of 2019.”

Interesting to see Waters on the not considered list. Does that mean he's back with us but injured, or has he been on the list each week while at Jersey and I've just not noticed?

Quite incredible from brown given all the games he's missed on international duty. Isn't it Grahame Murray? Can't find much info about him. Any of the old timers know much? Is rlequin still around?

Hopefully the new year will bring in a new habit of winning away from home, always a great ground to go watch rugby.

Grahame Murray
Grahame holds the pre-professional era record for the most appearances for Harlequins – 307 for the first team starting in March 1959. His senior career spanned 15 consecutive seasons and he was captain from 1965 to 1967.  His representative honours came via Oxford University, Surrey and the Barbarians.

Unfortunately I only knew him briefly as a youngster, a friend and club mate of my fathers.
After his playing career was over, he dedicated his time to the club, helping on committees, and becoming Chairman for a while.

He was a true gentleman, although very abrasive on the rugby pitch, a fair and greatly likeable man off it!
He never won an England cap, he should have apparently, some faces don't fit....!

Did the players in the amateur era tend to play more or fewer games per season? 300 plus games is a great achievement regardless of amatuer or professional. In Mike's case even more so given the England commitments. Other than the time out with concussion he's been pretty injury free I think.

Not heard of Graham Murray I must admit. Time to have another look at my Quins anniverary book (the huge one, not the picture book).

Waters is on the bench for Esher this weekend, so presumably his spell with Jersey is over? I thought he was there all season, and they seem to be playing well, so surprised he's back but now with Esher

With a Quins line up like this you could anticipate coming away with a win, but ......

These are the kind of matchups we just have to start winning away from home. No disrespect meant to Falcons - I feel even their fans would agree that that 23 is a fair way short of their strongest matchday squad. COYQ. Please.
