Urgent new signing required...
« on: Saturday 23-Mar-2019, 17:42* »
Notwithstanding comments re Ward elsewhere, please can we sign a very senior lineout coach. This week's signings worthless if we can't win our own ball!  >:(

I think we have a pretty good LO coach.  Prob is you cant polish a turd.  Ellia was very good against Gloucs, this week he wasn't.  I kind of expect that from him as he has only been playing Hooker about 2 /3 years.  Seems to me when he misses one his head goes abit.  He can be worked on.  Ward has no excuses

We missed crumpton today but we’ve signed Baldwin so fingers crossed for next seasons line out.  Let’s be honest it 100% better than last season.

I mention coaching because it’s not just that our throw-ins are bad, but because our lineout disruption is possibly worse. Numbers aren't everything but....

Attack: Over the past 5 Prem games, Quins achieved 100% lineout success once, against Bristol. Over all 5 games they achieved 46 catches from 58 throws – 79%.

Defence: In 4 of the past 5 Prem’ games, the opposition achieved 100% lineout success. Over all 5 games they achieved 59 catches from 61 throws – 97%.

So, not only do the opposition know they can challenge our lineout, they can be confident that we haven’t been coached to steal theirs.

The pressure on our hooker 'doubles' because the opposition hooker always looks good!

Elia started well today and was very good in the loose. Sarries also have a very good line out, so perspective is needed.

Ward was poor in general.

Hopefully the new signings will alleviate this

I was going to be sacked for incompetence, but I pointed out that i'd only been in the job for 2 or 3 years.

Wouldn't really say it is that black and white myself.

Hard to disagree with that, but I don’t think it’s a coincidence that we’ve signed a set-piece focused hooker and three locks.

Codling is highly rated as a lineout coach so it’ll be interesting to see if signings he’s been privy to will make a difference.

Well, we are 11th in the league - and that's with crumpton being pretty damn good. I'm afraid I don't buy the excuses for Elia, it's his job.

Can we also remember - not hitting your man is not solely the hookers fault - however it is a fixed skill - and should be drilled so all the options are as precise as can be.

Codling is good at this and i think the LO is better than last year - not just the keeping ball but also the defending of it - last year we were unable to prevent any driving line outs - this year we're faint better - so reckon we can improve this aspect - regular starters for consistency would help to establish the routine.

Yes, I remember Keith Wood getting a pasting on a Harlequins supporters' board (can't remember which board - think it might have been Julian's rivals board) when it wasn't clear if it was KWs throwing, the persons receiving or the opposition intercepting. The thrower always gets blamed - sometimes rightly, sometimes wrongly.

Elia threw it past the entire line out - and also managed once to mess up throwing it to the front. I like him but he had a bad day. Ward can’t throw and now has lost all the other things that made him an unlikely club hero.
