Team vs Ulster
« on: Friday 06-Dec-2019, 12:00* »
HARLEQUINS HAS ANNOUNCED ITS SQUAD TO TRAVEL TO BELFAST AND FACE ULSTER ON SATURDAY 7 DECEMBER, IN THE HEINEKEN CHAMPIONS CUP.

Kyle Sinckler will make his first appearance for Harlequins since returning from the Rugby World Cup, paired with fellow England front row Joe Marler.

Fijian forward Tevita Cavubati lines up in the second row with South African lock Stephan Lewies. Semi Kunatani joins Chris Robshaw and Alex Dombrandt in the back row as Tom Lawday is rotated to give Kunatani his first start of the season.

Head of Rugby Paul Gustard has made no changes to his backs that defeated Gloucester last weekend in the Gallagher Premiership, with late replacement winger Travis Ismaiel again starting at 14.

Gustard said “Ulster have a very proud record at the Kingspan and a strong history in this competition. They sit top of our group and are a side littered with internationals and foreign talent. It is exactly the kind of challenge you expect, and want, in rugby. We are looking forward to the game and embracing the contest.

“Games like this need no hype or incentive. We need to go there and put our best 80 together. We know the crowd are partisan and will create a terrific atmosphere, and one which will require strong refereeing to differentiate between fact and fiction. It will be a great cup tie and one for our supporters to relish and enjoy supporting their team and heroes.”

For this fixture, Harlequins will be sporting this season’s Big Game 12 kit, ahead of the annual festive showpiece fixture which takes place at Twickenham Stadium on 28 December.

The Ulster coaching team have made five changes to the side that recorded a bonus-point victory against the Scarlets last Friday. In the back three, Louis Ludik shifts to the right wing as the returning Jacob Stockdale comes in at full-back, while Craig Gilroy retains his spot on the left wing. Luke Marshall comes back in to the midfield alongside Stuart McCloskey, while Billy Burns resumes the fly-half position and once again partners up with scrum-half, John Cooney.

The front row is the same for the third game running; Eric O’Sullivan starts at loosehead prop, Rob Herring will line out at hooker, and Marty Moore packs down on the tighthead side of the scrum. Alan O’Connor retains his starting berth in the second row and is joined by Iain Henderson who comes in again to captain the team. Jordi Murphy returns at blindside flanker, alongside Sean Reidy at openside and Marcell Coetzee at number eight.

Adam McBurney, Andrew Warwick, Tom O’Toole, Kieran Treadwell and Matthew Rea will be the forward reinforcements, and covering the back line will be David Shanahan, Bill Johnston and Matt Faddes.

Ulster team to play Harlequins, Heineken Champions Cup Round 3, Saturday 7 December at Kingspan Stadium (3.15pm, live on BT Sport & BeIN Sports):

(15-9) Jacob Stockdale, Louis Ludik, Luke Marshall, Stuart McCloskey, Craig Gilroy, Billy Burns, John Cooney;

(1-8) Eric O'Sullivan, Rob Herring, Marty Moore, Alan O'Connor, Iain Henderson (Capt.), Sean Reidy, Jordi Murphy, Marcell Coetzee.

Replacements: Adam McBurney, Andrew Warwick, Tom O'Toole, Kieran Treadwell, Matthew Rea, David Shanahan, Bill Johnston, Matt Faddes.

Any idea when Crumpton is back? I appreciate Baldwin & Buchanon are both out for a little while but not sure about Crumpton

Symons, Collier and Botta not available, or not selected?

From treatment table on Nov 29th:

"Max Crumpton is out until the new year."

I'd struggle to pick our best pack now, which I think is a good thing. Symons would be in it though, and he's not playing. Crumpton would be too. Back row is now very hard to call.

I agree with the positive nature of the posts. I think the fact that we have a more settled side is a real boost. We can start to see the combinations forming and the team ethic developing.

It is a tough ask but that is a team who could do something different. I am pleased to see our Fijian forwards given a start together. They could do something outrageous  (without wishing to pander to stereotypes!)

I would say that a lot of lessons have been learned from Clermont and Northampton. I feel confident that we will give a good account of ourselves.

Come on you Quins!

I think we need to start quickly and try to prevent Ulster settling into their game. Too often we concede early and once we fall behind, desperation creeps in. It's a big ask, as Ulster are a quality side. I'm always optimistic but I'd be happily surprised if we get the win. Still, we've pulled off minor miracles before.

On a side note, can anyone remind me what the situation is with Baby Chis?

He had a good game aside from that utter stupidity at the end. I would still have Symons as first choice though.
