CLIFFORD TO CAPTAIN HARLEQUINS AGAINST NEWCASTLE FALCONS
ENGLAND INTERNATIONAL MOVES TO FLANKER FOR PREMIERSHIP RUGBY CUP CLASH

Jack Clifford will captain Harlequins against Newcastle Falcons in the Premiership Rugby Cup clash on Sunday at The Stoop (kick-off: 15:00).

Clifford, who played at number eight in Quins’ 19-27 victory over Bath in their opening Premiership Rugby Cup match last week, moves to flanker and Alex Dombrandt, scorer of a brilliant try in that Bath fixture, moves to number eight. Other changes in the forwards are Phil Swainston coming in at Tighthead and Dino Lamb starting in the second row.

In the backs Niall Saunders makes his first start for the Club at Scrum-Half, while Cadan Murley gets his first start of the season at Right wing. Ross Chisholm moves to Full-back and Tim Visser comes in on the Left wing. James Lang starts at Inside centre with Francis Saili moving to Outside.

Acting Head of Rugby Alex Codling said: “The Jack-man has made an excellent return to first team rugby over the past couple of weeks and we are delighted to see him lead the side out at our home on Sunday. His attitude and commitment has been first-class all season.

“Niall and Cadan have both earned their opportunity to start this weekend and, like many others, will be looking to stick their hands up and make selection ever harder for the coaching team.

“We enjoyed an excellent start to our Premiership Rugby Cup campaign last week at Bath with a 19-27 victory at The Rec with notable improvement in our attacking play while our defence, again, was excellent.

“It was another positive step for the squad this season as we strive to deliver that total performance. I have been very pleased with the effort and attitude of the whole squad in training all week and we relish the chance to take on Newcastle in front of our raucous support at The Stoop on Sunday afternoon.”

Who is Cadan Murley?

Other than being an anagram of Armed Lunacy.

Interesting team.

Struggling now to work out who is injured, who is rested, who is just not selected, etc.

So Mulchrone not involved, but I'm guessing rested. Walker not involved, but presumably straight swap for Visser, so just rotated / not selected.

Hoping Marchant is rested not injured

Actually looking forward to this with far more hope that Saturdays visit across the road which I think will be a tough watch for England fans. I hope I am wrong.

Murley was on DR with Esher. Played in the 7s and A League.  Winger or 13.  I think he has been involved with Eng U20 also.  From memory was part of the U18 Quins title winning side with Smith

I'm interested to see how Paul Lasike covers the back row.
It could be useful to have someone who can cover multiple positions now that Swiel has moved on.

Is Saunders the player who has come on as sub in the A team games? If so, he was impressive.

if you watched Falcons play Exeter last Sunday ,you know that Murley and Visser will need their running boots on to keep up with Radwan and Kyrige who were excellent .-

We have a good mixture of youth and experience , looking forward to it .

I would think it's Cheeseman who is actually the back row cover, as he played flanker in academy rugby, but as you say anything that allows you to make the bench options more flexible is definitely a good thing.

I'd guess Glynn is covering both BR and 2nd Row but if needed Cheeseman can slot in. If that's the strategy, does tend to lean towards the rest of the BR and a few 6/2nd row being injured though. Odd that there's not an out and out 6/7/8 on the bench even if he was there for a rest ie don't play him unless an injury on the pitch.

There's also the option for Ward to move out of the front row to flanker if required.
