The Nigel Owens column
« on: Saturday 30-Jun-2018, 20:54* »
Many wise words from Nigel Owens

Quote
Nigel Owens
It’s not the likes of myself or Gareth Thomas coming out that makes the difference, the people who make the difference are bystanders, those who are in the stadium who hear unacceptable abuse being shouted, turn round and tell those people it is not acceptable.

That’s what happened at Twickenham. I didn’t hear it, the people sitting around it did and it was reported and dealt with well.

It’s important that everybody plays a part in this and stand up and say it’s not acceptable

...

But at the same time nobody should feel they can’t shout out something funny at Nigel Owens. It just mustn't be homophobic or racist.

You shouldn’t be afraid of having banter with the referee, but you shouldn’t shout something that is abusive and crosses the line of acceptable humour, or the abuse becomes aggressive and personal.

Last season I remember Roy Maybank was running the line, and I remember in the West Stand we were getting slightly "restive" over what we deemed was him just ignoring obvious off sides! There was a man with a hi-viz vest with "MEDIC" written on it, and as he passed I shouted "Oi, Medic! If you see the assistant referee, can you check his eyes?". Roy Maybank ran off laughing!

Aaaargh!!! I had forgotten that. Still he was man enough to admit later that he had made a mistake.

There were several occasions from the east stand where we were "assisting" the assistant ref...he did put his hand to his ear to indicate that he had heard us, but it didn't seem to make any difference to his interpretation of a slipped bind at the scrum!

I was at the Millennium Stadium a few years ago at a time when the pitch was in a terrible state. Alain Rolland was the ref and after one particularly bad scrum had thrown up huge divots he decided to stamp them down quite forcibly. A Welsh "wag" alongside me shouted out … "be careful Rolland … that's where we buried the last ref !"

Funny how it still irks after all this time.

Certainly wouldn't want to be a football ref!

Rugby example something football needs to consider

Easy enough to sort out if anybody has the nerve to do it; slowly work your way around the protesters giving each one a yellow card until they stop, if they don`t then the the second time of showing the yellow cards will obviously lead to a red.
On another point, why oh why do they not stop the clock during these breaks in play to get around the arguments in almost every game over the amount of added time. Seems to me that the Football Associations are not interested in trying anything from outside of the sport.

It can't be that difficult to do, can it? Extra ten yards for first backchat, yellow for second, red for third. Wouldn't take too long for that to sink in, even for some of the less intellectually gifted amongst them.

I think the problem is at all levels in the game though - from managers of Premiership clubs to parents at the touchline, it seems that the football ref is fair game for anyone to have a pop at. Until and unless the governing bodies give the ref the authority and ammunition to deal with this, it won't change.

I always avoided refereeing my kids footy games because, frankly, I'd have ended up in prison for responding to all the rubbish that goes on.

Extra ten yards for first backchat,
I'm not sure that the 10 yards thing would work in soccer.  It is more about possession than territory.  Quite often, the ball is kicked backwards from a free kick anyway.  Also, it brings complexity if the backchat is near the goal - would the free kick get upgraded to a penalty?
I like the idea of just yellow carding a few players.  It wouldn't take long for the message to get around.  But, it needs to start in non-international games first. Another approach would be to hand a 2 minute time-out (i.e. sin-binning) and apply it to all players that are involved.  You might get some amusing scenarios where there are only a few players on the pitch.
One thing that they should have though is a citing process after the game.  I.e. record all conversation and give people a ban if the discussion merits it.  Also, this would stop players trying to head-butt each other when the ref is looking the other way.

I can't believe the people that came up with the offside rule can't find a solution to this! :)

They did use the 10 yards (metres?) rule in football a few years ago and it worked reasonably well when used. Unfortunately it was often ignored by refs much like a straight put-in is in rugby nowadays.
