The reason I'm most disappointed...
« on: Sunday 17-Nov-2019, 19:55* »
...at the moment is Gussy's post match reactions to our sub-par performances.

Last season he really seemed to be emerging as the type of call-it-as-it-is coach we needed. Not necessarily hard-nosed in the same way Steve Diamond might pin you up against the locker in the changing room, but pragmatic, honest and respected.

His media speak these past few games has really got under my skin and I'm losing faith that he's our guy. I wanted to see some anger from him. I wanted to see that he actually cared after losing to Worcester at home. I didn't see that.

This is not the way to do media in the modern game. I'm no expert but I just have a very strong gut feeling that it does the opposite of the intention behind it. I really don't think it protects the team - I'm convinced the players watch that and, subconsciously or otherwise, also lose a little respect for the guy. And that has to have a cumulative effect each time he walks out and says "we were mostly good".

Please, Gussy, for your sake stop it. You're not fooling anyone, and you're hurting us if you can't show that you're gutted losing to Worcester at home. Call it as it is - at least then you might have a chance of turning this around.

One of the things that really angered me at the end of jk's time was his post match comments. Full of excuses and telling fans that it was mostly decent, fine margins, etc, after another thumping

I agree that I prefer to see some honesty and anger from a dor after a bad loss. Don't call out individuals but don't sugarcoat it either

Perhaps he doesn't want to be too harsh on the team right now as they are working without a forwards coach - that's not the players' fault.

Do you think he reads this forum? I don't know, but I would suggest he probably doesn't.

If that is so, how is he going to receive your message?

I am not sure about that. He has looked really frustrated bordering on utterly peed off to me.

I think he talks through the game honestly and call out our faults, knowing they need to be worked on. Doesn't always mean we get it right next time, unfortunately.

It's tough at the moment and we seem to be struggling to find our identity. It was okay until the last three games. Things were starting to form up until we got taught a lesson at Saints. We need a big team performance on Saturday. Otherwise, we might struggle to mentally recover for a while.

It angers me that we have a reputation as being a soft touch. Opposition and neutrals see us, when we visit, as a routine home win and also as a potential away victory, even if the Stoop is "hard place to go".

Well, we have to play our part. Saturday is the place to start.

Thanks to the O/P for the interesting line of thought.

Every performance since Codling left has been embarrassing. It looks like whatever happened there has destabilised the team. We def need a quality replacement sharpish or this whole season will be finished for us before the new year.

We can't keep blaming coaches. At some stage the players need to sort themselves out. They shouldn't need a lineout coach to win the majority of lineouts.

A lineout is something I imagine needs constant practicing to get the calls and the timing of the lift and the accuracy of the throw bang on. Surely the coach drives that drill, otherwise what is the point of having one? The constant rotation of players cant be helping that familiarity either. Yes the players are partly to blame, but it does feel like there is something not right at present.

We are all disappoint, the line out hasn’t improved,
But we haven’t started with the same team two games on the trot
It’s almost like pre season games.
15 players brought in, Gussy Still trying to work out best team etc

But maybe we shouldn’t have wasted time with Chefs, and footballers, water parks etc and spent more time at the tackle bags
My biggest problem is the “ You know when your playing 3 weeks in advance” that I heard was said at Quinssa event, so that means you can’t play for your spot the following week, doesn’t make sense

If he does, I'm sure he doesn't bother reading anything you write. Can't remember a single input from you that hasn't been completely adolescent in nature.

Maybe we didn't spend enough time with team building activities.  I think we have good players - but somehow, for whatever reason, the team is not gelling.

His comments that he needs to work out how to rejuvenate the team amaze me. Why dod you need to rejuvenate a team barely a month into the season, after pre-seaon with lots of new faces

Maybe someone should have attended this event from Quins:
