Tabs mentioned that with 33 weeks to the new season, there is an "accepted player programme" of eight young lads who've been told to get themselves ready for premiership rugby.

I could take a guess, but does anyone have insight on who the eight are?

I wonder if it includes players who have already had a taster of the Prem? e.g. Mata's, Hyde etc
Hopefully Benson is one of them.

The inference was they're going to be relied on, and need to be ready to step in. So I was assuming it'll mostly be players who've already been involved to some extent, e.g. Beard, Baxter, Riley, Hammond, Anwanyu, Matas.

Back to the "8 players" that need to be ready in 33 weeks. Any thoughts on who they might be?

Could be:

Matas
Hammond
Benson
Taulani
Hyde
Cleaves
Anyanwu
Baxter

Who else?

I know that most of these have already played first team rugby, but I'm taking the "ready in 33 weeks" to mean they can expect regular game time, rather than just the odd 10 minutes, or filling in due to other players' unavailability. Could he be also referring to the likes of SGB? Someone who needs to show a consistently higher level of performance, rather than fluctuation between very good and really not that good at all.

Presumably Tabs' 8 players are still in the academy, so I'd go with -

Alikhan
Benson
Bradley
Cleaves
Hobson
Hyde
Slevin
Trenholm

Riley would have been one of them also.

Not sure if that's a reply to me but Riley isn't in the academy.

I guess Tabs wasn't necessarily talking about academy players but that would seem a bit strange as presumably all main squad players would be considered premiership ready, otherwise what the heck are they doing in the main squad.

It was a reply to Quinky.
Riley has been away with Scottish until recently to continue his development and keep match ready.

Whilst I tend to agree, I explained that I don't know if he's differentiating between being called up to fill a gap / play a few minutes, and being a genuine first team regular player. As squads trim down, we are likely to see situations that we've had in previous seasons, where we're down to our fourth or fifth choice in any one position; part of that was due to the first/second choice being so clear and obvious, and hence the drop in quality thereafter. With more players able to claim the spot through merit rather than desperation, we wouldn't have such a drop off.

One way of thinking about it is that the players who are most likely to have to step are those who are replacing departing players and those likely to be involved in the RWC.

Which would suggest LH, TH, HK, 8, FH, IC, OC, W/FB are the positions they're most likely to need a kid to step up.

That might suggest something like Baxter, Jibulu, Litterick, Trenholm, Benson, Hyde, Bradley, Slevin?

In other words, everything bar lock and scrum half? :)

He's a pretty big unit already. I wonder what Andre was like at that age.

Gigantic. He made his international debut a year later.
