The streets of Conor O'Shea and Italy will separate
« on: Tuesday 10-Sep-2019, 11:37* »
https://www.onrugby.it/2019/09/10/italia-rob-howley-sara-il-nuovo-ct-della-nazionale-a-partire-dal-2020/

Or so says Google Translate.

The streets of Conor O'Shea and Italrugby will separate. The Irish coach, who arrived on the blue bench in June 2016, will in fact leave his post whose natural expiry would be in June 2020 at the end of the four-year period. What is not yet clear is whether this will happen directly at the end of the Rugby World Cup 2019, leaving the place to the Welshman Rob Howley already for the Six Nations 2020 or if instead the rotation will take place during the Summer Test Matches. Probably the decision will also be taken in relation to the performance of the national team at the next World Cup .

Howley is a technician already accustomed to the international scene, given that since 2008 he is on the staff of Warren Gatland and that he has already had experience as head coach (ad interim) of the Dragons, when Gatland himself was busy preparing for the Tour with the British & Irish Lions. The new coach will work with a staff that will be composed of Franco Smith, who will take the place of Mike Catt for the offensive aspects, and Giampiero De Carli, confirmed as an assistant in the management of the work reserved for the forward ones.

There have been mixed reports of his role there and I’m struggling to see whether it will be remembered as a success or not. I recall some mentioning he has had some responsibility for the oversight of the development of the broader game in Italy and therefore could he be given any credit for the significant improvement in Italian sides in the Pro 12 and Euro competitions? However when it comes to the national side’s performances it’s hard to see lots of progress. Seems to be a tough project for whoever gets the job...

Italy have got worse under O’Shea.

Which is quite an accomplishment when you think about it

I don’t know if they’ve got worse or more Scotland in particular have improved and England, Wales and Ireland have put in some serious performances in recent years. All in all I think they’re probably about the same but with a bit more promise than before.

More promise than before? What a silly comment.

They’ve gone backwards under O’Shea, who certainly won’t ever be getting the Ireland job.

Why silly? Such a great method of bringing people round to your point of view.

I'm not saying he'd get the Ireland job - I personally don't rate him as a DOR myself after his Arsene Wenger style post 2012 methods.

What I mean is that the Italian set up at least now seems to have a structure where players are coming through with more frequency plus Zebre and Treviso are steadily improving. They're not competing with the top sides in the Pro 14 yet, but they're not being thrashed every week as they were before - finally. It's about time. Remains to be seen whether this recovery will translate to the national side - I have my doubts, they've had plenty of false dawns before.

He's a fixer, adept at coming into a team with problems, identifying key issues and fixing them in the shorter term.  Not convinced he has the solutions to take him beyond the initial uplift period to sustained success and not convinced that Ireland need that particular skillset at the moment.  A career as a rugby consultant may await.

Ireland's decline over the past 12 months (and that sounds weird given they've just got to #1 in the world) suggests *something* needs fixing.

There was a tweet today I read (forgot where it was from tbh) but it mentioned that COS would be heading either to the RFU to work on the Development side, or to Sale.  Howley heading to Italy.

COS has said publicly on more than one occasion that he doesn't want the Ireland job and wouldn't accept it if offered. I can't remember how he phrased it but the gist was that the job changes your relationship to Ireland permanently, and he would rather keep his relationship with the country of his birth separate from his job.

He's got a long standing reputation as a system builder - initially at the RFU (where he's generally viewed as the person who created the modern academy set up). Stuart Lancaster succeeded him in that role when he went to do something similar for the English Institute of Sport, and came to Quins when the funding model for English sport was changed and the EIS role was gutted. At Quins, he inherited a team that was more or less where it needed to be and added the finishing touches.

Most people I've spoken to on the club coaching side are of the view that 2011-12 was the club overachieving in the face of Sarries' blatant overspending (and have hinted that they weren't the only ones), and we did well to stay in contention as long as we did, especially given that JTH and Lowe picked up career ending injuries when we wouldn't have expected to replace them for some time.

Can't find it but at the beginning of his tenure in Italy he was to look at the overall game in Italy.

As such he has been instrumental in the improvement of Benetton and Zebra which in the long run has to help the Italian national team. But 4 years isn't enough for this to happen. His successor will probably reap the benefits.
