Its a professional sport now with coaches training players on every little edge they can get. The referees maybe need to set their stall out early in the match and come down hard rather than being buddy buddy and looking for "co-operation".

To be fair we are light years away from where discovering opposition fans in our stands would trigger a riot, but I know where he's coming from. When you see Danny Care trying to achieve vertical take off, do you think "good on him for trying to influence the ref" or do you think "leave it Danny, just play the ball"?

Refs have all the sanctions needed. Firmly and consistently applied, these change the game instantly. Whatever happened to the 'rule' that the only player that could speak to the ref was the captain?

I think it gets a bit blurred when refs talk to players. If the ref penalises a scrum, he may say to the prop "your feet were too far back, you slipped, that's why I gave the penalty". At which point the prop responds "You missed the guy opposite pulling me straight to the ground. I couldn't help it" and so an exchange starts up with a player who isn't the captain.
