Thoughts after first two games?
« on: Monday 28-Oct-2019, 09:21* »
Noticed an absence on here of in play messages during opening games and people’s reflections thoughts after games.
What have people who have been at the first two games of the season thought of Quins performances? In particular, how have our new signings fitted in/added value (Landajo, Garcia Botta, Lewies, Lawday and Evans)? And are their any areas in our game that look markedly improved from last season?

Aside from defence, it looks like a repeat of that past few seasons. Judging by how competitive the season will be, Quins will be battling for top 6 at best.

I think our set piece is showing signs of improvement too. Lewies looks like a proper lineout operator and has been good around the field as well - looks like a decent signing. Lawday, Evans and Landajo have also really impressed me. They will be in the 23 for most of the season I'd have thought and add real depth and options. Lawday has been really good going forward, Evans is causing real problems for oppo at the breakdown and works hard, and Landajo offers quality ball and confidence keeping defences guessing when DC isn't available/off the bench.

Scrum has been really solid too given the absence of Joe and Kyle. Credit has to go to Botta for that, although we'll need to see that continue when all the RWC props return to the Prem to really judge.

The issue is that I think all teams look to be improved this season and there just aren't any obvious easy games like there used to be in years gone by. I think top 6 is about right but if we play to optimum levels consistently then I think we'll have a shot at 4th place too. Big "if", but Gussy has the dressing room so anything's possible.

Fwiw, I think Bath and Leicester will be slugging it out at the bottom with Worcester and Irish. Going to be another tight relegation battle I reckon...

I never imagined I'd ever see a prediction of Bath/Leicester slugging it out at the bottom of the league. I still see them as the giants of the game (Saracens/Exeter recent interlopers). But That's how they were when the game went professional, and everything runs in cycles...Still, amazing!

Only saw highlights of the Exeter game, and my view of Saturday's game was imparied by my very dirty glasses! Pretty uninspiring game on Saturday but hard to know how much of that was due to the weather.

Landajo looks like a really good signing. Not sure I can comment muchy on the rest. We have arguably already played one of the two toughest games of the season (Exeter away, the other being Sarries away) and avoided a potential banana skin at home, so 5 points out of a possible 10 so far seems like a decent return.

Still learning to recognise quite a few of the newer players, especially the front rows who seem to have collectively adopted the Will Collier look...

Defence has been awesome so far. Attack has looked more organised but still very much a work in progress.

Will Evans will be the signing of the season he has looked every bit as good as Robshaw has been.

Front rowers all look good, Botta, Kerrod and Baldwin all looking useful although Baldwin has given away a few pens.

Landajo has looked lively and with Care and Saunders we have a good trio of 9s.

Being honest I haven’t noticed Lewies much other than at the lineouts. Still early and hoping he will come on more. Young has look promising when coming on but a bit light weight to dominate for 80 mins.

I've been a little disappointed with Landajo's kicking from the base, but apart from that he's looked the business.

Impressed with Evans, Baldwin and Garcia Botta but haven't seen enough of Lawday to form an opinion yet.

What was noticeable was how much our scrum improved after Lambert and Kerrod came on - if you had told me before the game that they'd outperform Garcia Botta & Collier I'd have laughed in your face, but it seems Lambo's on a bit of a mission this year!

I'd say we've started OK. We seem to be more resilient, the defence is far more organised and in general I'd say our attack is looking fairly structured. The new guys certainly don't seem out of place at all. I agree with the comments about Will Evans, he looks like he could be a real asset this year. Smith's place kicking looks to have continued the improvements shown last season and has certainly added an extra 5 or so yards to his range.

Our handling basics stunk a bit on Saturday but I'm not sure how much that was down to the weather. Overall, cautiously optimistic. Particularly seeing as we'll be adding Marler, Sinckler, Goneva, Kunatani and Campagnaro to the mix as well as the short term injured or out of the squad like Care, Brown, Buchanan, Baby Chis, Saili, Ismael and others.

Baby Chis was actually on the field on Saturday during the warm ups. So, I guessing he isn't injured and he was probably there in case of a last minute injury.
