Phenomenal player and a tremendous coach. Had such an all round game and I will never forget his agility as he darted to the tryline. A great reader of the game both on and off the pitch as others have rightly said.

My favourite memory of him playing for me will always be that time away to Toulouse where from our restart he chased the ball into the hands of the opposition winger, smashed him in the process, secured the turn over and eventually led to a Brown try and further more a very important away win.

Wish him the best in his future ventures!

Don’t believe it is anything to do with Gussie. If you listen to podcast very much Tom’s own decision and I am sure Tom has been reporting as much to Billie as Gussie. I am glad he seems to be able to move on and hope he can be successful at corporate coaching

Does his dad still have a corporate box at Quins?  If so, hope to see him around more as a fan.

Very best of luck to Tom. Always enjoyed watching him play, picking some great lines, always available for the pass and tackling way above his weight.

A bit of a surprise and a shame to see him go. I wish him the best of luck for the future and hope Quins have lined up an equally capable replacement.

I will always remember him tackling Shane Horgan by leaping on his back "like a cheetah taking down a wildebeest" - which got a laugh from the fans around me.

There was always a rumour (I cannot recall if it was confirmed) that after bloodgate he demanded a 3 year contract extension and a 7 year coaching role.

If that is correct (i am almost certain it is), I suspect that may be the reason why his time is up.

Exactly. Not a coincidence that he's leaving rugby on the 10th anniversary of the event that sadly defined his career....clearly the end of the parachute deal that was struck with the mgmt at the time. Good luck to the guy.

I find it slightly hard to believe that if either he or the club had not wanted him to be around for the last few years he'd still be here because of a deal struck 10 years ago.

Maybe a deal was struck, but if it wasn't working out then these things can be brought to an end. He was clearly highly rated by players and other coaches alike and I believe was one of the young coaches they bring in for the u20s each summer to gain further experience, so hardly like he was just on the books because he had to be, biding his time and collecting his check.

I am 99% certain he was given a 3 year playing contract and a 7 year coaching contract. And I am also 99% certain that the deal was demanded by TW.

I never expected it to be renewed.

Feels a little oversimplified and feels like you're implying that he didn't earn any of that contract time. The last 4/5 years of his playing career were impressive for me - he was a major part of the Prem winning squad - and I've only ever heard glowing praise when it comes to his coaching. Someone I always imagined was on a pathway at the club. Even if we assume that it did go down that way and Tom demanded 3+7, to say there wouldn't have been any interest in keeping Tom after that if he'd wanted to stay in rugby is pure speculation at best and absolute nonsense at worst. I've never thought of Tom Williams as a burden on the club - only ever an asset.

Do you mind us asking where you obtained your information from?

I have to say that I am with TomBuckQuin here; TW was an asset both before and after that dreadful event.

Yeah that 7 year coaching part sounds like a load of cack.

To be clear - I am not saying that TW has not earnt his contract time. He has always been in asset in my view.

However, I am told (from someone very closely involved in the aftermath) that the demand was made.  And it was not appreciated by the club.  Feel free to think it's a load of cack.  But I am very confident in my source.
