I'm sure there are some backward s***holes where that happens due to not having the same rigorous pay legislation as western countries. Although I'd be wary of trusting anything this fake news journalist writes.

I do. And it doesn’t happen.

Or more accurately certain demographics (basically white men) are paid more than others (women, BAME) for doing the same job.

https://www.standard.co.uk/lifestyle/london-life/equal-pay-day-2017-gender-pay-gap-uk-a3688011.html

A quick Google search brings up a range of articles for a subject you claim doesn’t exist all of which point to men being paid more than women for the same job and level of experience - ranging from a 1% difference upwards.

Since you own a business, I’m really glad you are enlightened enough to not fall into this trap. Although I’d question what you’re doing to ensure a diverse workforce at all levels - including those who don’t traditionally apply for those roles but would be a great fit.

Nothing you’ve said so far shows that you even understand that this is an issue but if somebody is not part of a demographic, it is very difficult to see the world through the eyes of somebody who is. As a result, your company’s product/service won’t necessarily appeal to that demographic and neither will your business as a workplace.

You’d be missing out on customers and talent.

A fascinating take on my business. But try this for a few facts:

I own the business. I earn less than my co-director, who happens to be female. And non-English.

I've ensured that my workforce is good at what they do - that, to me (and most successful business owners, I'd venture) is more important than ticking boxes or achieving quotas. I do confess though, that I don't employ people who don't apply for jobs. Silly me.

My company's products do seem to appeal to a fairly wide demographic, now that you mention it. Oddly enough, no client of mine, or of any company owner that I've ever asked, has ever been questioned about the diversity of their workforce (other than a couple of meaningless forms when looking to get paid). So that suggests to me that perhaps such things matter less to buyers than good products, good service, good price; or perhaps they really matter only to social justice warriors who don't own businesses and never have to make decisions that affect profitability.

Interesting that you pick up on people "doing the same job" with identical experience, qualifications, ability, productivity, track record. Oh, you didn't; you only mentioned "doing the same job". That's a really narrow way to value someone. Have you really ever met two people who are identical?

Anyway, thanks for the heads up. I'm happy with the customers and talent that I have, and they're happy too. And we're growing, so maybe I'll dodge the "pursuit for diversity" bullet. Especially since, as a white English male, I'm a minority in my own company.

So we’ll conveniently ignore “according to the World Economic Forum, there is no country in the world where women make as much as men for doing the same work.” shall we?

I've looked at the last WEF report - 2018 - there's no way their figures are "for doing the same work" and neither do they say that's the case.

Do they count The Wimbledon Championships in that?

Where the women get paid the same as the men for a minimum of two sets, maximum of three sets, while the men do a minimum of three sets, maximum five sets.

Is that fair?

Nobody remembers Carrie Gracie and the BBC pay issues for female staff a short while ago then. Along the lines of. Man presents news 400k, woman presents news 120k .

Was that the guy who worked twice as many hours as her, or was that a different one?

Tell me of any rugby club in the UK that rejects anyone who wants to play rugby. Anyone can play if they want to.

The only thing I want to change is people like you looking for some kind of perceived wrong, based on overly simplified metrics.

Have you found the rugby club that rejects blacks and Irish yet? Or have you finally left the 1970s. Be quick, the Viking may slay me if I don't get a move on.

Deliberately avoiding the very clear point is certainly a laudable tactic but let’s persist.

Here’s a few more direct questions:

1) do please define “people like you”.

Presumably you mean 50 year old white affluent privately educated middle class conservative rugby fans. Because that’s me.

2) what do you mean by “anyone can play if they want to”?

Does that mean that anyone who actually reaches the point of walking into a rugby club doesn’t get turned away? If so, that’s not the issue. It’s creating opportunities for people to walk up to the club in the first place or indeed, the club existing.

3) Have you never heard anyone say that rugby is a sport for posh boys?

Here are some facts:

There are 55m people in England

Participation in rugby is falling - down about 30k over two years to 2018 leaving around 240,000 playing regularly.

7% of children are privately educated, 68% of the 2015 England squad were privately educated.

The RFU and Premiership pour money into things like the award-winning Project Rugby in order to get under represented groups into the sport we love.

https://www.premiershiprugby.com/projectrugby

And a final question:

4) Do you think we’d have worse rugby teams if more people took part?

Here’s the Sink also talking about people needing opportunities:

https://amp.theguardian.com/sport/2019/aug/16/kyle-sinckler-england-eddie-jones-rough-diamond-rugby

Or Christian Wade making the same point:

That still doesn’t add up Quinten.

It does when you've over-estimated his earnings by more than 100k. And that's forgetting his length of service, experience, relative popularity, profile etc. No one had even heard of Carrie Gracie until she started whinging. People seem to forget that these people have a market value based on who they are, It's why Vanessa Feltz earns a lot more money than many male presenters - it has nothing to do with gender, it's down to talent and popularity.

Erm, she really doesn’t anymore unless the male presenter is Rolf Harris. Her time has passed.

Carrie was working as BBC China correspondent and discovered that she was being paid less than an equivalent male correspondent. Then we all discovered, after some digging, that generally the BBC paid women much less than men doing the same job. This was big news and embarrassing for the BBC which is well known for its equality and inclusivity.

They are all paid far too much money for reading out stuff from a piece of paper, or a device.
