I think like anyone, he's grown into his role. I seem to remember him saying at a "meet the ref" evening that he didn't rely on touch judges much, very much "the ref is in charge". Now he's saying more help from TMOs would be welcome. So how he is now is just fine, he chats to the players, he clear as crystal about what he wants or why he blew the whistle. So yes, I think it's a shame he's retiring, but fully understand he wants to go out at the top. Would be nice if rather than disappearing into the legal profession he still remained attached to rugby.
