I like him. He was persona non grata for a while after the ridiculous "ball's out" pen against Will Skinner, but since those days he has improved immeasurably.
.

I spent a really good 3 hours with Will Skinner on the train from Geneva to Lyon prior to the final a couple of years ago. I raised that actual incident with him, and his response was that Barnes had warned him a couple of times prior to that, and in Wills view, that whilst not to the letter of the law, he actually deserved it!

Will explained that the refs have to make their decision whether they want to be everyones best mate or be aloof aka Mr Barnes. He still held him in very high regard.

The good thing about those 3 hours was that Will asked us more questions then we did him and was really keen to understand the supporters point of view.

I guess a Barrister earns more than a Referee then?

Yes, peanuts for what they have to do.

Well not quite peanuts, and they do get a good seat to watch the matches I suppose.

Will be greatly missed the difference between watching a game reffed by him or Nigel Owen and the youngsters is huge. No stop start with them and sometimes consult TMO withou stopping the game.

Remember the name of Barnes being mentioned at Surrey sports park, and was told probably the best ref that the team deal with.
Also been fortunate to have a couple of brief chats with Barnsey and has always been a nice bloke to talk to and as you would expect his knowledge of the game ( and Quins) is impressive
Will be missed

Whilst watching games at the Stoop with Wayne or in fact other refs too you quite often think ,what was that descision for, only to watch the game back with the ref miked up and discover that they are right nearly every time.
Going back to will Skinners yellow when the ball was/wasn't out, I was more cross about the illegal scrummaging during the fifteen minutes of resets.
