Championship challengers Ealing are preparing to take legal action in the event of Newcastle being declared title winners and promoted on that basis.

Ealing were 18 points behind Falcons when the RFU abandoned rugby because of the coronavirus crisis on Friday, but defiant boss Ben Ward insists their promotion fight continues.

As things stand, the popular assumption is that Newcastle will take Saracens’ place in next season’s Premiership, but Trailfinders rugby director Ward told The Rugby Paper: “We’re taking counsel at the moment from a legal perspective as to what our position is.

“We’ve still got to play Newcastle and we have a game in hand, which is against Yorkshire Carnegie, so while they look like they’re far ahead of us, the gap could quickly close.

“You look at what’s happening and I get this is a unique situation, but why is Premier League football saying it must preserve the integrity of their competition when we don’t?

“Premiership Rugby aren’t prepared to end their competition yet, so why are we lumping the Championship in with the community game and being told to call a halt?”

While most Premiership clubs are slashing player wage bills, Ward says ambitious Ealing will continue paying their players full whack as they continue to think big.

Ward added: “Nothing will stop for us. We won’t change players’ salaries. We pride ourselves on our player welfare and we’re building for the future, so that carries on.”

Ah another club who prides itself on their player welfare. It ended well for the other club that was always banging on about this like they were the only ones didn't it?

Cheeky on the part of Ealing when looked at in the context of this result:

21 Dec: Ealing Trailfinders 14 V 26 Newcastle Falcons

it's a shame the return fixture on 28 March hasn't yet taken place.

Have Ealing decided they want to be cast into isolation by every club for ever if they go ahead with this stupid case?

Hopefully common sense will prevail - Newcastle will be promoted and Ealing will stand their lawyers down.

To be fair I don't think Ealing have asked their lawyers to stand up yet. As far as I can see (and I may be wrong) the only comment suggesting the possibility of legal action from Ealing has come from their DOR and I would imagine there would be a number of others who would be involved in making such a decision - chief exec/board/owner etc.

Could it be a tactical manoeuvre to get a better position in bargening for a place in a 14 team ring fenced premiership from next season with Saracens staying up 'for the good of the game'??

There is no way Salarycens will stay up. The rest of the clubs will not have it.  Ealing have a tiny chance of promotion but if you look at the results it’s pretty clear that Newcastle deserve to go up.

If Wuhan Flu leads to Salarycens staying up it would be a travesty, mind you it would be interesting to see how Sarries would do without their stars who are all going off on sabbatical all over the place.
Personally I don't think it would be unreasonable to promote Newcastle straight off. They haven't lost a game, they beat Ealing with a 5 point to nil league point difference away at Ealing earlier in the season and have missed out on going up North for the return fixture and as we all know Newcastle can be a difficult place to go and get a result. I honestly couldn't see them getting those points to make up the difference and overtake Newcastle. 18 league points is minimum of 4 games they'd have to win with Try bonus points that Newcastle don't get anything from and then they'd have to go up to Newcastle and beat them..... Not happening...

What about Richmond top of National league 1 relegated last year? Yorkshire Carnegie bottom of Championship by a million miles surely can’t stay up for a 2nd season at Richmond’s expense again?

I think Rosslyn Park will be a bit grumpy if Richmond go up though.

I think that, if the remaining fixtures cannot be played, the current standings should count as the final standings.

Yes, some teams across all leagues will be disgruntled at missing out on promotion/safety/European qualification/silverware but in an imperfect situation teams should suck it up and accept an imperfect solution. Ultimately, those teams should have been better thus far. And I say that accepting Quins would miss out on the Champions Cup.

Had Richmond won at the Rock it would be all over.
But that win for Park pulled them back to 7 points behind with five to go.
Richmond did not have gimme games except perhaps Moseley (6th, 7th, 9th, 11, 13th) - and they had to play two of the sides they had lost to this season. But I doubt many would have been predicting them to lose. And they would need to lose at least one for Park to catch them.

Mind you there is a need to fix the Championship - 12 teams does not generate enough matches to fill a season and so they have the mickey mouse cup.

There is also need to reduce travel for the amateur sides.

The plan was to fix this for the 2021/2 season - but with two months without rugby, perhaps we should use the time to do the proper consultation.
Except we are talking the RFU.

Richmond would also still have to play against Blackheath.  That is always a hard game.
It is odd the National 1 that is mainly amateur teams has 16 teams and a lot of travel.
Whereas the Championship is mainly pro and only has 12 teams.
I remember discussing this with someone from Richmond in the clubhouse just after Richmond were relegated.  He was saying that the playing expenses were similar for a game in National 1 - but there was less funding.  Basically, it costs similar for Richmond to go to Darlington as it would cost for say, London Scottish to go to Newcastle.  But Scottish get more central funding to do so.

However, all that being said, I quite like it that Richmond are in National 1 - There are some nice away games (e.g. to The Rock)

Whether Nat1 should be as large or be national is one thing (or two things :) ), but the Championship reduced to 12 because the bottoms teams were getting smashed, IIRC.
