On a different note, I see that Folau's post picked on a range of people, none of them doing anything illegal. Why is there no uproar from or about atheists, drunkards, fornicators and the others?

We just didn't want you to feel too picked on.

If one is allowed to express an opinion that homosexuality and/or a religious belief is a wonderful thing, then logically one should also be allowed to express a contradictory viewpoint?

Not in the slightest. Affirming something that people have no choice over is very different from condemning it. Who people choose to bump uglies with is none of anyone else's business, as long as they are consenting adults. Actually, if I want to act in a way that will send my non-existent soul to a non-existent Hell, that's also none of anyone else's business. Why is it that some religious types feel that they should have any kind of authority over other people's lives?

I’ve been reading this thread with interest at peoples reactions to the subject. The Islanders are a very religious lot and it seems important to them. I find religions to be pretty contradictory in their ideas and if you dig deep enough you will find some quite shocking stuff about what should be done to “other” peoples. Religions are also Facist in that they command you to live your life in a particular way or face the consequences. In the modern world many of the things within religions are offensive to certain members of society who can now be “openly out “ in whichever group they see themselves in. For the most part society is now far more tolerant, and so it should be but there is still a long way to go. I’m quite happy for people to be religious it’s got nothing to do with me until it singles out a particular group for persecution. That’s why I’m not religious. It’s a shame because religions do so much good in the world and then ruin it by hating the different branches of their own religion and then trying  to kill them.
Once again, with Folau’s comments,  religion has caused more trouble. I suggest that he watches Life of Brian and Book of Mormon.
I hope I haven’t offended anybody

Both sides of this debate are intolerant, that was my point. Where do you stand on intolerance of Christians?

Christians are perfectly free not to be gay if they so wish. I'm entirely tolerant of their wish only to be heterosexual. What they do in their bedrooms is none of my business, as long it's consensual and doesn't involve children.

They are also entirely free to not take part in Pride marches, hold hands in the street as same sex couples, or for male and female Christians to marry. Again, none of my business, and I'm not going to criticise them for doing it.

I'll even tolerate their bloody church bells waking me up occasionally on Sunday, as I do our local mosque's call to prayer. Personally I find both sounds quite pleasing, even if they do occasionally affect my hangover status.

They also have freedom of speech, like everyone else, to talk about their views if they wish. What they don't have is a special kind of freedom from consequences of that speech, something that no one has.
there's a lot of reworking of the meaning of freedom of speech going on these days.

And then you have a further quandary... Most religion is fair game for humour or mockery... Whereas with others you risk being called a "phobe".

**** me. (Unless god tells you not to)

Are you just really satirically amusing or actually as silly as you sound?

Those are choices.

Being gay isn’t a choice.

It's sad that people find it hard to believe that there could be a god. When you look into carbon dating and evolution you can find so many flaws. Carbon dating is based on so many assumptions it's laughable but everyone has been brain washed from nursery onwards. Thanks to social media like YouTube the real truth is out there. You no longer have to be a sheep. You can research yourself and think for yourself.

Reading this thread it seems anyone who has any sort of faith is backward and fair game to be slagged off. Anyone who is overly sanctimonious is amazing and beyond reproach. This is why I asked these threasa to be put off topic but apparently this nonsense is all part of our core values. This level of hypocrisy and sanctimony is why people don't follow the sport

Indeed. When I tell people I am a rugby fan, they always say "sorry, that's too hypocritical and sanctimonious for me!".

The thing you're missing here is that I, an atheist, do not claim carbon dating and evolution aren't flawed. The difference is I don't expect to know all the answers. Why should we? That's a totally insane expectation in my mind. The universe is so impossibly vast and we are such a small part of it that while our pursuit for ultimate truth/knowledge/answers brings fascinating new developments, the pursuit itself is ultimately futile I believe. Our sun will burn out and the earth will cease to exist before we ever know everything there is to know about life. Human science does its best but acknowledges its limitations.

Whereas religion claims to know the answers. Just my opinion, but that's the biggest flaw in religion for me.

I've done plenty of research. I've read the Bible. It's written by humans who wanted to put a framework around their lives. Thousands of years ago. You're welcome to believe what you want to but you're not convincing me unfortunately if that was your hope.

One thing you're right about: I'm brainwashed. So are you. Life = brainwashing. We choose to believe what makes most sense to us based on the data we're exposed to/the data we go out and find. The fact that your brain was washed with a different flavour of soap to mine is kinda what makes life so interesting.
