Why the lack of away support ?
« on: Sunday 06-Jan-2019, 20:47* »
Was surprised how few travelled up to Kingston park yesterday possibly the smallest turnout I’ve seen from Quins at Kingston park.
I know time of year etc will effect numbers, but does seem this season that numbers for away games has diminished.
Is it that there’s no coach travel? People not going because they think we will be beaten? Finances? You would think with 7k ish members we would perhaps get a few more travelling.
Nobody could put there finger on it yesterday so would be interested to hear what people think

The home crowds have also diminished. Probably largely down to the poor rugby on show over the last 2-3 seasons.

Yes, For me last season’s performances pushed me past the point of going out of my way to go to away games as I just stopped enjoying it anything like as much as I used to. Used to go to a few and now will stick to home games only. I now have a young baby too and she takes up a fair bit of time :) so the combined factors meant no away trips for me this year.

Keep up performances like yesterday and I think numbers may swell again though.

Let's be fair, the team hasn't shown up at most away games why expect fans to. Used to go to a lot of away matches but has dwindled down due to outside factors, if I have to make a choice of doing something if it is highly likely to be watching Quins lose then other options usually will take priority.

Train strikes, engineering works and reduced parking (at times) has made it harder for me both home and away. Living the other side of London turns even a home match into a full day out at the best of times.

The turn out for Sep is always smaller than the rest of the season. Challenge Cup turn out is always smaller than big cup whatever it is called

Simply travelling to away matches doesn't have the same spark that it once had. I remember many seasons ago we used to discuss on the old CAW car sharing, away tickets prices and seat locations, where the quins fan could meet ie pub, restaurant, cafe, We'd all walk to the ground as a group talking, singing meeting new friends, all sit together giving the TV cameras something to concentrate on between breaks, walk to the bar at half-time together, laugh, joke have a good old away-day laugh regardless of the score but no regardless of last 2 seasons game play, players would salute us 'bothering' to turn-up........... NOT ANY MORE!

Trains from kings cross were diverted via Cambridge which added about 90 mins there on Saturday morning and same back yesterday morning ... great game but a bloody long trip.

What I really liked was Gustard making a point of thanking the fans who were sat near him in the West stand

I think that most rugby clubs, and other sports, are suffering with a reduced attendance right now.
It would appear that people are picking and choosing which games to attend which I think is a combination of expensive prices, tickets travel food etc & other commitments people now have, the last few games on TV I have watched have, I think, been poorly attended I cant remember too many empty seats in previous years at Leicester or Northampton but there are more now...…

I also think that whilst increased TV availability is a good thing as it does increase exposure to the game a number of people will watch/record a game rather than attend in person.

Plus of course, Quins, have been very poor away from home for the past few years!

This isn't complicated. We've won about 3 games on the road over the past couple of seasons. Sure some people will go to away games whatever the situation, but most people make decisions based on their likely enjoyment.  If Quins start performing away from home then more people will consider it a better investment of time and money than the alternatives.

Same at home, to a lesser extent of course. Fewer casual fans for a team which, up until this season, has been in freefall.
