Will Carling

Chosen by Eddie Jones to mentor players. I find extraordinary choice. I don’t know Will well but last time I saw him at the Club was for BT launch when he did not engage with any members or speak very well. I won a rugby ball duly signed by him when I took it down to Dorking none of the youngsters even knew who he was! I presume Martin Johnson would not do it but why not JW?

I'm not sure that kids not knowing the name of an England captain who last led the side 22 years ago is that surprising. They probably don't know who JPR is either, but that's because we're old....

Of course they didn't, much like they probably couldn't name more than 2 or 3 England captains of the 25 there have been since him. But nobody has captained England more than him, he won 3 Grand Slams and got to a RWC Final.

That he doesn't work in the media to become well known to the younger audience shouldn't matter. If they Google his achievements, they will then respect his place in English rugby history.

He's probably not someone I would have picked, but then EJ has spent more time speaking to him recently than I have!

According to the BBC hes there to mentor the senior players more specifically in leadership. So it doesn't matter one bit, if the wider playing public know who he is or not, as I'm sure the current players know his name and can respect his achievements, as Cookie listed.

He made a career out of teaching leadership skills when he stopped playing rugby. It doesn't seem unreasonable therefore to pick him in the role reported.

It's a role Bum face has been doing since he retired so quite natural for him, not a bad choice based on his expertise and experience.

I listened to him speak and then spoke to him as few years ago. I was impressed by what he had to say and how he put it across.

Can’t see any negatives by appointing him, seems to me like a wise appointment

If memory serves, he started making a career out of leadership when he joined the Army. I think he might have learnt something there ;-)

Can’t think of anyone more suited tbh, very good inspirational speaker and when your hearing it from someone who achieved so much wearing the rose it makes sense
