Just a shame he doesn’t have Dombrandt or Marchant with him.

Twitter seeming to think that Furbank will replace Farrell at 10 with Atkinson  coming onto the bench.

I defo can see Furbank starting at 10. Smith is 95% fit according to Jones, so he is holding him back until a cameo, in the second half.

Also, it would be good to see what the squad's utility player, can do at 10. We may well need that scenario in a world cup group game!

I agree. Smith's on the bench for a reason - fitness/lack of squad training.

Im pleased with this development, but not in the obvious im happy at OF getting covid, more so for the forced change.

Furbank at 10 makes sense. He isn't in my view good enough to be a starting player in terms of some big series, as if it was a straight choice I think Steward and Malins are ahead of him in the FB stakes. Having him around as a jack of all trades bench player who can fill a position in an emergency is probably going to be his realistic shot at getting England game time anyway so we might as well see how he goes.

Eddie Jones must trust Marcus Smith in Tonga test - Jason Robinson

Quote
I’d like to see Marcus Smith brought on after 25 minutes against Tonga at Twickenham today. He should have been starting this match but even if there is no Owen Farrell that doesn’t look likely so bringing him off the bench when the initial Tongan fires are burning out would be the next best thing.

If he is fit enough to be a replacement he is fit enough to play so let’s see him.

This is the ideal game for Smith to be showcasing the skills that took Harlequins to the title last season and seeing how they translate to Test rugby. There is no point in him wasting his time twiddling his thumbs.

England need a spark and Smith can provide it to take their game on from such a poor Six Nations. It is what the country is crying out for.

With that in mind, I was pretty underwhelmed when I saw the side Eddie Jones intended to put out there with Farrell initially named at stand-off.

This is the game to learn about players who could reinvigorate England.

I wanted to see Alex Dombrandt given a start at No 8 not sitting next to Smith on the bench. He is another who has been ripping up trees for Quins.

While it is a strong England team that will take the field, I feel a real opportunity has been missed.

If Marcus trained yesterday then surely he's good to start for at least 60 mins? I do get the feeling Jones doesn't want to play Marcus in case he plays a blinder and then people will be against Farrell coming back in to the side. And if Farrell came back in and England reverted to the style of the last 6N then (surely) he would then have to drop him, which he clearly does not want to do.

I don't think Eddie Jones cares what people think and Marcus Smith won't keep Owen Farrell out anyway because he'll play at12.

Well if Farrell's there at least we won't need Slade for his kicking. 😁

Yes, that was dreadful, I don't know why someone else didn't get a go. I'm sure Jonny Hill can kick better than Sladey did!
